Well since 1/4 Inch and 3/4 inch figured tops are very expensive, the import lines and sometimes even high end models come with laminates. Now, for a long and time and still today they were basically just printed textures and then with the transparent paints it used to make it look more real. They are very hard to tell just by looking, however sometimes through refinishing you can sand through it. Other wise, now a days they can take figured tops like quilted maple and have it cute into 10 half mm to 1mm slices. They use very expensive cnc controlled diamond saw blades to get a nice cut. That way it is real quilted maple, except now a single top can become 10 tops. I don't how long this method has been in use, all i know is that more and more guitars are coming with laminates rather than printed.
