As the title says, I want to know a bit more about the SL4, what came before it and what alternatives you would consider.

that about covers it. rosewood instead of ebony, jt580...not a bad guitar. there isn't a direct alternative. closest would be an early '90s professional soloist....GEAR:
some guitars...WITH STRINGS!!!! most of them have those sticks like on guitar hero....AWESOME!!!!
some amps...they have some glowing bottle like things in them...i think my amps do that modelling thing....COOL, huh?!?!?!
and finally....
i have those little plastic "chips" used to hit the strings...WHOA!!!!

wasn't the sl4 indonesian or something like that? I recall seeing the country of manufacture and thinking to myself "I though that was MIJ... weird...".
The Charvel Model 5 was a 2-hum neck-through as well, right? and with a price-tag rather significantly lower than an SL2H, I'm thinking (since Charvel at the time seemed to be to Jackson what Epiphone is to Gibson, but I might be off by a mile or two)? Were most cheaper-than-a-car neckthroughs HSS designs?

hmm... I'm thinking starting this thread might have been a bit dumb... Seems I'm not familiar enough with J/C to even ask the question I asked is there any good place for information on the various J/C guitars (and the neck-throughs in particular)? Something along the lines of vintagekramer.com?
