  • RR3R pickup suggestions?

Getting my new RR3R setup and new pickups installed soon. Still tossing around ideas but I'm not sure what sounds what with a bolt-on Rhoads. I've always been a LP guy so I know what pickups sound like in those but with this being my first bolt-on, and Jackson, I'm not sure if my research is leadin' me in the right direction.

At first I was thinking about EMGs, but then I started leaning towards a Dimarzio Liquifire in the neck, and a Dimarzio Tone Zone in the bridge. Maybe an Evo, though.

As far as music goes, I like it all...from Kiss to Killswitch Engage, from Megadeth to All That Remains, Ozzy to Dream Theater, Joe Bonamassa to Children of Bodom, Zakk Wylde(Pride & Glory, Book of Shadows, BLS) to Trivium, to GNR and Glass Casket, etc. etc.

No I'm not saying I'm looking for a set of pickups to encompass all of this but obviously I'm not lookin' for a Duncan JB/Jazz set, either. I'm not even familiar with the type of wood this guitar is made of or what works best with this setup(bolt-on, wood type, etc.) so I'm leavin' it up to you Jackson experts to make some suggestions.

According to the catalog scans and the SD website, your guitar has the HB103 Duncan Designed set in it. Id try them out before you pull them. I have the DD103(same thing, older version) in my KE3 and its killer. If you end up not liking, I think I could find them a good home. May the forum gods have mercy on me for stating that outside of the classifieds.

For the stuff you listed.. it seems like just a JB jazz seems fine, but thats what I have and love it. Hate EMGs and dont see the whole attraction to Dimarzio. Just me though.

      Jackson PS-4 (99'?)

...because of your experience with them?

Had them in a few LPs, actually. Also had Alnico II Pro/Jazz set in one, too, as well as EMG 81/60 in one as well. The Studio in the pic is the only LP I've kept(the first one I bought) and I've kept it original because I love the tone it already has. Got it refretted by Mark Kane at Fat Sound in Cary, NC a couple weeks ago and he said it was by far the best playing/sounding Studio he's run across.
