  • so i'm an idiot. also advice.

back around 2001 i sold my mid-90s (i think it was a 1994) Kelly Pro for like $500.

    durrrr

had no idea it would triple in value, but what can ya do?

anyway i wanted to sell it at the time because i realized that tremolos are just not for me.

after buying and selling instruments over the years what i have right now is a Ibanez SZ520QM (Korea) and a Schecter Damien 6 (China).

the Schecter is quite crappy, but it has a very "cold" sound for black metal rhythm bits, so its good for that...but that's about all.

the Ibanez has way more versatility than the Scheter, but the short scale is something i can't really get used to and i don't much like the feel of the neck or fretboard in general anymore (really easy to slip the high E on to the binding)

lately i've realized that i'd like to have a Jackson again.

seriously considering trading in one or both of my current guitars towards a SLSMG. played an older one without the active pups. loved the neck and feel. pretty much like everything but the pickup selection switch, but i can live with that.

my question basically, is i don't know what the newer SLSMGs with the real EMGs sound like. there's nobody who carries them in stock around me.

i play mostly black metal, blackened death metal, etc. play a little clean for intros/breakdowns but that is all. usually i like to be obscenely over-distorted.

do you think the sound of the newer SLSMGs would work for me?

is the shielding good on the newer SLSMGs?

    thanks!

i've been considering it. really do want a string-thru soloist of some sort and the SLSMG is all i can afford. honestly, i'm not a good enuff player to even deserve a USA soloist. if PowerTube's green swirl SLSMG had a case i would have bought it immediately.

I've never played one but your description of what you want fits the SLSMG to a tee... You like the feel, EMG's are great for the sound you seem to like and handle all the distortion you want, and you can find them pretty readily at good prices.. I'd say go for it.

Ironically I have a Ibanez SZ520QM and a Schecter omen 6 with emg 81/85, both listed in my ebay store(click for cheap plug) I don't have..nor ever played a SLSMG.... but this Jackson JRR-94 Concept I just got seems to be extremely well fit for Death Metal, its got a bottom end that only Jacksons have ever had, fast frets, no trem, and pointy so you could bludgeon someone with it... which is about as metal as you can get... Now my Schecter Omen 6 is a nasty bitch maybe its the EMG's but the neck feels very nice, one of the 3 best all-round guitars I have actually, and I gone thru about 50 in the past 6 months... you might wanna try getting a used set of EMGs and dropping them in your schecter, worst case scenario you have a set of EMG's

Also too call me perverted but those Agile Multiscale guitars look about as cool as it gets, and I have heard good things about them click here for the multiscale page

            thanks for the replies.

that string thru RR looks really nice. i just find strat bodies work very well for me because i play sitting down a lot. they're not super aggressive looking, but they're practical.

when it says its a "concept" what does that mean? is it not readily available? it seems a couple people online might have one, but from the looks of it, its a rare guitar.

i'm just getting that from a value list i've seen online, perhaps its no longer accurate. this was a set-neck Kelly as well.

if i didn't take a bath on the sale, i'd feel less stupid, so it wouldn't upset me if it was worth less. its not mine anymore anyway.

It's a neck thru and they go for about $800 tops.

Yeah, and my 386 40Mhz PC went with 4MB of ram and Windows 3.0 for $2000 back then too. Who cares what it sold for new.

Why are you guys crapping all over this guy? He made a fubar and sold his Jackson Kelly (I did the same thing) and now wants to get back in the bloodline with a Soloist. Help the dude out!
I have no experience with Soloists myself, but the active EMG's should fit the bill for you nicely!
