  • Jackson RR5.. Code Name... Metal...

Well i picked up this RR5 6 months ago from a guy on HC i think i cant remember..

Decided why not customize it some... Ive been practicing my inlays. Simple stuff like blocks and so on.

But i had an old epiphone v that i took the board off on and i felt pretty comfy so i said time to "metal" up the RR5..

So Here are... My first real project that i will try not to get any outside help on (hopefully)

Going to try it all on my own.. Still a little unsure about painting and finish.... but ill cross that bridge soon enough.. Might just get Mike To do this for me..

here are some shots of it.. My thoughts are.. and please anyone having some brainstorms send em over..

    My thoughts are

RED LED fiber optic Sidemarkers.. (already have this down pretty comfy i think)

Fill in the neck pup pocket

Im thinkin about using block inlays and using the Srimshaw? method of Inlay and score/Scratch a pentagram in the first inlay then fill it in with red epoxy and see what happens.. Ill do test runs on this first.. But it should fill in the scratches with Red and sand down leaving only the pentagram and block showing...

but here is almost what it will look like..

Im also thinkin about having the hardware like bridge, Tuners, Plates all that anodized red...

So here are those pics. As well as my Fretboard stockpile.. even scored a few Brazilian RW boards. i might be wrong. but the grain is rich and tight like on my PRS artist.. either way its super pretty...

The boards have been air dried for past 11 years according to the dates on most of them.. I dont think the ebony ones are dyed yet but Damn are they are dark black already!!

    What do you guys think????

My concept mockup... Using the Custom shop generator

    Before and after fretboard removal..

Here is the Ebony board i picked out.. I might just leave it like it is and use another one.. this one just Looks pretty..

Heres my stockpile and some samples...

I have 70 of these Pre slotted unradiused 25 inch scale 22 fret East Indian Rosewood.. Beautiful boards... But i dont have anything around to fit em.. Projects anyone?

    handfull of ebony boards

And what i think is Brazilian.. Not sure.. but either way still pretty pretty grain.. Rough cut

I'd go with that first ebony board and just leave it as is. That would look killer!

Really nice boards you got there.
I say go for it! Sounds like a killer idea. And post pics of the entire process.

Question: How did you remove the fretboard without damaging it?

Yeah i remember that one (fucking awesome) but IIRC the fretboard wasn't salvaged as it wasn't going to be used.

The old iron with a wet towel trick works nice. Heats its up nice but doesnt burn or dry the board and it should get the glue to weaken and expand, so you carefully get behind there with fine and wide paint scrap or pry and pry as you steam your way towards the headstock. Works nice, but gotta be patient.

what about ferrari red, black bevels, matching headstock and ivory or white binding ? Would look better than terrible red binding imho.
