  • "Shuriken" models at Guitar Center?

Has anyone seen these? I'm assuming they're just JS-series guitars with different inlays and finishes, but you never know with GC-exclusive models. Specs show them as having cedro bodies (meh) and the cheapo Jackson CVR pickups, but pickups are easily swapped. I'm assuming bolt-on necks, although the ad doesn't specify.

I wouldn't normally care, but with their current financing offer, one of these might be a cool project guitar.

They are in the monthly GC catalog for August. It was in my mailbox Wednesday. They aren't on the website, at least not yet. There are three models in the catalog:

King V - Quicksilver w\ black bevels, dual hums and licensed Floyd (black hardware) - $399
Rhoads - Black w\ red bevels, dual hums and licensed Floyd (black hardware) - $399
Dinky - Transparent red quilt, S/S/H pickups and two-point fulcrum trem ("smoked chrome" hardware) - $249

All three models have "shuriken" inlays that appear to be MOTO, and bound rosewood fretboards.

        They are on page 15

Kinda cool, but I still like the sharkies better.

          Thanks for the link, Daly!

The fretboards are bound, but what about the headstocks? (I couldn't tell)

And next to them you see schecter, which gives more bang for the buck just by paying extra 100 $...

Based on the JS30 or 32 (Floyded) models, it appears.

              Definitely bolt-on.

Nice top on the Dinky, but a v-trem = fail.
May as well have been stringthrough.

Stopped at a GC last night and checked out the KV and RR, as they didn't have the Dinky. The black/red finish has already been done on the Rhoads JS, so the only change is the binding and inlay on those. The silver/black finish on the King V really does look nice, especially with black hardware. Unfortunately, the inlays - which would probably look cool in MOP or abalone - are more white than pearloid, with quite a bit of filler. Cool from a distance, but up close, they look like what you'd expect to find on a cheap Cort or Stagg starter guitar. The binding is only on the fretboard, not the headstock, and is white rather than the creme "ivoroid" on other Jacksons.

I didn't play either of them. The KV does look nice, so if these ever turn up dirt cheap on eBay, it might be fun to mod one. I'm thinking that a DK2M neck would look really sweet on it. But at the current price, they're typical GC mediocrity. I briefly glanced at a couple of other "exclusive" Ibanez, LTD and BC Rich stuff, and it's really the same story all around.
