  • Jacskon JS1

    Guys,

I recently discovered my old Jackson JS1 and it is being set up as we speak. However,im pretty miffed as to which year it was made.I know i bought it around 2000-2001,but the serial number is 97080397 This has confused me as i thought the JS1 was released in 2000 sometime, and that you use the first two digits to indicate the year(1997).

I know i have one of the older ones, but could someone explain exactly which one! ive heard the older ones are a lot better than the recent versions.

    Cheers

    Lee

With most Jackson bolt-on guitars, there is mfr date info stamped on the heel of the neck and inside the neck pocket on the body.
Just unbolt the neck and take a look in there and see what info is there.

Import serial numbers generally don't tell you much info, especially on bolt-on guitars.
RacerX has a good database of serials and is a pro at guesstimating the year bolt-ons were made by the serial number, but I don't think he's gonna help you now.

They've been around even longer than that. I bought a JS1 in around 1996-97 at Guitar Center, possibly as an "exclusive" model and thus not in the Jackson catalogs of that era.

                Er, why not?

Let's go with 1997 JS1, Made in India.

                      The plot thickens.

Just looked at the heel/neck joint and its got some writing(handwritten)and its not too clear:

                      D VOORUMM
                      9/4/98

As i say,i cant read it clearly.

thanks for your help so far.

Also, which materials were made for the body? That Cedro stuff? although i thought they only used that recently.

I don't have mine anymore, but as a Guitar Center model, reliable information about materials was practically nonexistent, as the old JS1s were not listed in Jackson catalogs. I doubt it was cedro - basswood or (more likely) plywood would be my best guess - but I personally was amazed at how nice it played for a $200 guitar. I don't think it was built in India either, and if it was Taiwan or Indonesia as I suspect, I wouldn't be surprised that the neck pocket markings don't match up with usual the Jackson model name/number scheme. Hell, the serial number might have been meaningless for historical purposes.

A lot of the GC and Musician's Friend "exclusives" over the years may share model names and features with regular production models, but when it comes to the low-end stuff (especially in the `90s) I wouldn't expect accurate info. My JS1 was a good guitar, good enough to start me down the road to buying many more Jacksons, so specs weren't really much of a concern.

I agree with most of what you wrote there, but he did supply a serial # that conforms to Indian format (albeit a bit earlier than I've seen before), so I'm still gonna go with Made in India on the OP's axe.
