  • About RR3 necks...

    Hi !

I jam with 2 guys who both own RR3's. One is an older model, black with silver hardware and pickguard and Duncan Design pickups. The other one is newer, with JB / Jazz pickups.

I was surprised how different the necks feels on both guitar. The neck on the older one is much thinner, with a "flat D" shaped back. The newer one's neck feels a tad thicker and rounder, kinda like a "C shape".

Did Jackson change the neck shapes on their import line sometime ?

I believe Jackson has never been very consistent on neck shapes

Yeah ive got a late 90's RR3R with the satin hardware, and the neck is razor thin... the newer ones are considerably more beefy that that, a totally different feel.

One of the things that I have seen too is that I had a RR3 that had a RX10 neck on it. Maybe it was swapped but I doubt it. The rx10 neck is thinner.

If you look around you can snag an RR5 for the same price as an RR3 for some crazy reason - at least you can in the UK anyway. I paid £300 for my RR5 with hardcase and Blackouts in it.
The RR5 is a vastly better guitar (I had an RR3, bolt on Rhoads or Kellys just dont feel right to me).

I had two RR3's: And older and newer one.

The newer one had an X series Kelly neck on it, and the old one the old RR3 neck. Such a different feel.

I've actually run into this quite a bit, so glad to know I'm not crazy. The late 90's/early 2000s RR3 necks were a good deal thinner and do seem to have more of a D profile. I actually had a late 90s RR3 neck that measured in at 17mm at the first fret (Eerie Dess paint with chrome hardware, 2001 model) that I bought used from Daddy's. It's possibly it was shaved/sanded down, but I really couldnt find anything to proof that it didn't come that way factory. I've also got a RR3R neck that I bought for my latest build project thats somewhere's around 18.3mm at the first fret, while the 2003 neck I bought measures a little in right at about 19 mm (which is spec) at the first fret. The weirdest was an RR3 I bought off Evilbay a couple months ago to flip. It was factory stamped as an RR3 neck from 2007 but the thing measured in at about 19.5 at the first fret! I'm pretty sure it was an RX10D neck stamped RR3 by the factory.

I bought another rr3 off Daddys that ended up coming with an RX10D neck, but I thought it was just a mutt. Sounds like it could have been factory though.

So how much would you spend on a used RR3? Good to very good condition?

Depends on if its on the pickups, with or without case, any upgrades, etc. If its just the guitar with real seymour duncans $350 is about right. The older ones with the Duncan designed pickups I wouldn't pay as much, as you'll need to put some money into it.
