User Feedback needed: Dominion in the near future.

I am working a trade deal with a local shop for a neck thru Dominion. This has the SD '59's in both positions, and the coil taps. This does not the binding like the newer ones with the oiled necks, but the painted neck and shark eye inlays. River Bed color..
I only got to check it out for a few minutes as they were very short handed. I like the feel and the balance of this one but would like to hear from others about thier experiences with this model. I did do the search thing here and about 6 pages on google.
Just unsure about a painted neck and having those Pearloid Buttoned Sperzel Locking Tuners, as i have never used these. I know the neck is thigh thick and only 22 frets, but the ebony board is beautiful. Any bad experiences with the Schaller 456 Fully Adjustable Bridge with Anchored Tailpiece? I haven't had one of these either. LOL!
Are the twin '59s in these positions a good match?
I am far from a shredder and play mostly 80's rock/metal. The reviews seem to say the same things, "covers all genres well, good tones" etc etc..
I just want your experiences with this one, please.

Mine is Bourbon Burst, and I love it, the painted neck is fine. The pearl buttons are nice, and the '59s sound great through a high gain amp for many different tones. It's also got the smaller, medium jumbo frets.
About the bridge... it's just your standard TOM/stoptail. Jackson's site is wrong about having a Schaller 456.

How does the '59s clean sound? Never used coil taps before.
I have a SD SH-2N from a DK2M body that I could put in the neck position.
What is your two cents?

The '59s sound great clean, and the coil split is pretty decent. I also like the SH2 Jazz a lot... it's a tiny bit less output than the '59, and a little brighter. I think that the Jazz would be great in the neck paired up with the '59 in the bridge. Though, try the stock '59 first and see what you think.
I don't have any need to change from the stock '59s in mine. Some people complain the '59 can get a little muddy at times in the neck, but I think it's a pretty good neck pup overall.

I really don't think any guitar can go wrong with either a '59 or a Jazz in the neck position.

Same here, I'm happy with my Dominion (and still glad to have gotten it back!).

I put Duncan P-Rails in mine, though, just for something different

The pearloid button Sperzels aren't any lesser quality than metal button models, but then I'm not stage-diving and moshing and retuning it every 3 minutes, so I can't comment on durability.

I thought the lack of 24 frets would be a hindrance as well, but I've got a ton of 24 fretters anyway, so if I need them, I know where to go


It's a great guitar, very well made, comparable to early 90's neckthrough Pro quality IMO. It's pretty much my "Les Paul" these days.


Until I turn it into a 12-string, that is :p

Played it again today. That neck is thick...alot lighter than my DK2... Needing a deep cleaning...but VERY good sounding on the clean channel, down and dirty with the gain turned up. The dealer is busting my balls on pricing, but a deal is close. My Ibanez RG370DX and a little cash. His is the first version, a slight scuff by the body strap button, but ....I can live with that. Not so crazy that the coil tap switches are gold on a black/quilt body with chrome hardware.
Dumb question: How do the locking tuners cut the strings? Or am I wrong on these?

Non-cutting on those. I mean, if you tweak the knob hard enough they'll cut, I'm sure, but then the tuner would probably be bjorked

Switches are easily replaced. DPDT chrome handle from Radio Shack, Screw-Mac, etc.

It's an all-in-one bridge with fine tuners.... a Schaller 456. Schaller also makes a regular fine-tuning tailpiece like Jackson used on the Kevin Bond Rhoads.

Gibson also has a TP6 which looks similar that B.B. King uses on Lucille.

The neck is pretty thick... reminds me a little of the Dave Mustaine KV speed neck profile that's D-shaped, just much thicher.

The only thing I notice about mine, since it's got a chambered body, is that the guitar is pretty light, but it seems a tad bit neck heavy, but I use a leather strap and have no problems.
