    Very nice work!

I'm usually hanging around more in the Charvel side of the fence, or I would have checked this out sooner!

I do this kind of thing all the time, although I've never done a clear'd over graphic- I run a small design/graphics studio in my day-job, so I've got access to all of the equipment that this is done on.

A couple observations from my read-through:

    1) the 'checkerboard' pattern is a function of what's called "air egress technology" used in some of the higer-end vinyls used on vehicle wraps- basically it is a series of small air channels in the adhesive layer, designed to let bubbles squeeze out from under the graphic without having to pop them from the front. The vinyl used for your print was actually the 1st generation iteration of this, as the newer versions fixed that problem with smaller channels and different patterns. The same vinyl is also available without the air egress, but for small print jobs you may just have to go with what the printer has in stock.

    2) Nice work on the hand-cutting for the HS logo and the hidden lion- I do have a computer-driven vinyl plotter that does the same thing, just with the precision and accuracy that comes from CAD devices. It makes me cringe to see that pattern-over method, just because the computer makes it so clean and easy. I'd be happy to help out if you ever need more done-

    3) you hit the nail on the head with the 'vinyl edge transition' issue- I guess you put enough clear over it to fill in the step down where the print transitions to the paint? I'm definitely interested to see how that finished off. Looks excellent in the pics, but can you see/feel it at all through the clear? I've come up with a few tricks myself for this kind of stuff- but I mostly try to use hard-edged guitars (with binding if possible) that have a nice square edge that I can trim on. LPs, acoustics, etc. are what I started out doing, and then moving up to SGs (which have a small roundover edge) and finally my last one was a strat. Those large roundovers & comfort contours can make for some great fun.

Here's my last one- a squier '51 Vintage Modified Strat that we gave away at my band's last show:

Basically had to wrap the guitar, and then the HUGE pickguard to make it look good.

    Oh yeah- Green Strap!

Dang man, wish I could have talked to you before! Next time I do a similar project I'll be sure to give you a heads up, that Strat looks damn good!

To answer some of your questions, I did give the edges a generous amount of clear, so there is no step. However, there are a couple of small spots where I did sand through to the vinyl egde, so there is some white showing. Mind you, they are hair line at worst, but it's still a pain nonetheless. I'm thinking I might use some black nail polish to touch it up, as that seems like the simplest solution.

In regards to doing a bound guitar, I was thinking about that after I finished this project, it seems like it would be a lot easier, and would probably have much better (cleaner) results. I might just go that route when I do the next one, even though it seems like you have been able to handle regular edges quite well. Would you mind posting pictures of some other vinyl projects you have done?

No problem! We've been doing these as promotional pieces for our shows- helps to get the kids away from their xboxes for a couple hours. All the artwork comes from our show posters, lovingly crafted by our man-at-arts Jeffective. I do the wraps myself on whatever guitar fits the promotion budget for the show. More recent ones have been sponsored by local music stores, so we've been able to do some nicer giveaways.

Here are a few of the most recent ones:

        Jellygirl SG:

        OctoGirl A/E 12-string:

"Ninja vs. Bear" brandless LP 12-string:

There are galleries of all our guitars on my band's FB profile here for closeups and more details.

Also, I posted a process thread on the OSG forum with some decent in-process shots of the OctoGirl acoustic here.

Let me know what you think!

That is really cool that you have given so many away, and the prints look really great. That material looks more ideal for an instrument than the checkered stuff I used. How did you manage to wrap around the curves of the Strat, I'm still wondering? Does the graphic continue to the back? And is it all one piece or is there a seam somewhere? Anyway, you have done some awesome stuff!

                  Green strap. Keep it simple.

The curves on the strat were tackled with a little heat, and a bit of stretching. The guitar body itself is wrapped with one seamless piece of vinyl, and then I used another identical one for the oversized pickguard. This type of vinyl is very conformable to complicated curves- but the smaller scale of a guitar does make it a bit of a hassle. I ended the wrap on the flat edge of the strat's side, just before the roundover transition to the back side. With a hard edge transition back to the black of the guitar's original paintjob, it made sense to end it there since I didn't wrap the back. Without a clear overcoat, there would always be the possibility of sleeve/forearm/thigh contact catching the edge of the print, so I sealed the edge with a small stripe of the clear overlaminate. It is virtually invisible (noticable only within 6-12 inches) and makes the transition nice and smooth.

If I ever do fall in love with a graphic enough to put it on one of my stage guitars, I'll definitely take some pointers from you on the clearcoating- so far I've just been doing these as promotions only- basically leaving the door open for the winner to remove the wrap if they don't like it. A couple of them have shown up onstage at other local shows with wraps intact- so I think the winners have liked them enough to leave the wraps on.

                        • Stunning, simply stunning. Never would've thought the brownish tiger pattern could work so well with bright green.

                          Well done, love it.

                          • I know it's a little late, but I finally got around to recording a video with my Tiger DXMG/DKMG. To reiterate, I put in a Dimarzio 36th Anniversary PAF, and the rest of the hardware is bone stock, *including* the tremolo block... just thought I'd throw that out there. I think it sounds great, and it plays like butter. Who says imports can't hang with the USA's?

BTW, who's excited about the new VH album?
