Sure, the binding isn't flawless, but it's nice and even in thickness. However, they've been going wild with the fret files, leaving grooves in the binding on quite a few spots.

Have you gotten your guitar set up just the way you want it? How's it feel now that you have played it a while? I'm gonna copy you and get an OFR bar as well!
I haven't gotten it perfect (only did it myself, haven't taken it to a tech yet. I might eventually) but it feels great! Like you, I do have some sharp frets which are kind of tearing up my index finger, but I've just been too lazy to file them. It's not so bad that it would keep me from playing it though. Yeah, my pics were pretty shitty in my NGD thread, but my cell phone camera wasn't very good, I'm still meaning to get some better ones, but I don't have anything better to take pictures with at the moment.

I ended up replacing the whole bar assembly with an OFR one, I tried just sticking in the bar without swapping out the barrel but it still had more wiggle than I like. Not sure what's up with the bars they come with, but that's an easy tweak. I also put some blackouts (AHB-1s) with white covers in. The EMGs went into another project of mine. Once you get it set up let us know how hard it rocks . It looks killer!

I thought basswood was a little more similar to mahogany and poplar closer to alder.

Cool Joe, thanks for clarifying! Now that you say so, I definitely remember reading about the similarity between poplar and alder... must've gotten it mixed up!

No problem. Basswood seems to have more mids and growl than poplar. They're similar in the sense that they can have whitish/greenish mineral streaks sometimes and usually don't look all that great with a trans finish, and they both seem to dent very easily.

Wow, nice guitar. Now I want one...

The only thing is I'd like see a matching headstock, but then that's something I'm always complaining about!

Ok guys, thought I'd do a small update.

I ordered an oversize 34mm brass block and replaced the stock zinc block that comes with the FR Special. This made a big difference actually, and I can recommend it to anyone buying an X-series guitar with a Floyd.

I didn't replace the zinc saddles. One can probably question if it was that necessary to change the block, when I didn't change out all zinc components. Well, anyway...

I put some PTFE tape on the floyd post threads to get rid of any wobble. After oiling the fretboard I strung it with 10-52 Ernie Ball strings, and tuned it to D drop C. I normally use heavier gauge D'Addario XL strings, but I thought I'd try something new. They feel good, but next time I think I'll put a .54 for the C string instead of a .52.

I took it to rehearsal yesterday, and I gotta say that it feels SWEET now that I've gotten it halfway set up (waiting to see how the neck reacts to the new strings, and I need to intonate it as well). The neck actually feels like an old friend, with the exception of the somewhat sharp fret ends, which is really my only complaint with this guitar. But I'm really looking forward to getting all the final details done!

I can't see the pics either.

Good review though. I've been looking into getting either an x series rhoads or king V. Can't decide which!

You said it came stock with straplocks? I've never used straplocks, but that's pretty cool they come with them for the price.

I've only had trouble with Dunlop locks. Schaller or bust!
