Hmm, is the cutout a separate box or a notch inside the control cavity? The HZ version uses a battery too, for the afterburner. Youre sure theyre not hz's? Even though theyre passive you will get no sound without the battery. I have a dkmgt (HZ version) and it has the cutout in the cavity too. Is the 3rd knob a push-pull?

Nope, 2 tones and a volume no push pulls and it looks factory. The pups have a sticker with 81 and 85 printed on them. It's a cutout in the cavity probably just like yours. I figure it was either a leftover of bodies or a special run for a big name chain. I have yet to actually see one like it with 3 knobs and not have the HZ's in it. The guy I got it from thought it was a 96 because the serial number started with a 96, when I pulled the neck off it says 2003. 5-1 on the neck and 5-2 on the body. If it is something weird it doesn't suprise me. Weird follows me. LOL Plus who in their right mind would take all the stuff out of it and not reuse the turbocharger?

          Yes, 969 is a 2003.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but these weren't upgraded to real EMGs until 2006?

I'm thinking someone swapped out the HZ's as often is the case. I'd wire it for two volumes and one tone.

I thought so too but I googled 2003 dkmg and some of the hits showed the new config and were said to be 2003. I think theyre wrong. LOL. This is possibly what happened with the OP's guitar.

Very common mod back then apparently. Nebraska and Iowa are kinda close too.

Why someone would change them and not keep the turbocharger is silly. Oh yeah I wish it was in there.

It doesn't need the afterburner with the other battery in it, it sounds pretty good for actives.
