  • making a Jackson RR5 from a JS30rr

    Hello JCF users!

I'm really glad I can share my Jackson related thoughts on here

I started a project... I had a jackson RR3 that came with a floyd rose tremolo and I sold it because I had a bit of a financial problem and bought a Jackson JS30rr...

well because I got it really cheap (120 euros) I decided to make it look better... so I started to rip off all of the hardware

I stripped it too much ... that Indian Cedro wood is really "soft" and I smashed the edges and holes ... I was stripping the paint with a machine (I know I'm a dumbass... )

this picture is showing the body filled with wood filler... I filled the holes for string ferrules because I made a RR5 style string plate ... well ...
here is a Dreams versus reality picture...

    string plate show-off

    2nd coat of primer

3rd coat of paint (it's half mat)

the guitar looks like this now ...

I think I should afford some better pickups for her because I think she's a beauty now :P the job was done pretty well ...
the stock Jackson hum's simply aren't so good ...

rate and comment please ;D Thank you for watching!

Oh and if someone could put his original Jackson RR5 string plate and control plate into a computer scanner and send the file to me I would be more than happy I would really
like to compare how much I failed the shape :P

    Thank you!

I really dig it when people put this amount of work into fixing up their axe, then share the photos with us here on the forums. The guitar looks beautiful man, good job

Regarding the shape of the string/control plate, you should be able to find a detailed front shot of a body and make some measurements (noting the appropriate scale). If you're lucky you might be able to find some drawings/plans with some measurements on the google machine.

If you look at an RR1T, you'll see the string thru plate basically touches the control cavity cover. It also is not shaped symmetrically, but is offset a bit, like the body. I don't own an RR5 (anymore) to compare but it appears to be roughly the same.

oh you guys don't realize how happy I am for your comments!

Yeah I know my "homemade" control plate should be touching the string plate but the problem came with the material the aluminium plank I had was too short... Oh and believe me or not I was searching all of the forums and google it all around for any kind of schematics or anything ... the only good thing I found was a high resolution picture of a jackson RR5 :P

I'm going to make a new set of plates because I'm not really happy with current ones ... this time I'll try to really be careful for all details... I'm trying to get it as good as the original...

The neck is stayin' ... If I could afford a new sharkfin neck It would be already bolted on the body I'm thinking about some inlay sharkfin stickers ... or maybe real inlays I don't know :P
but I think I should spend some more attention and my money for a good sound ... probably some EMG's or something ...

I still have to drill the holes for strings... But I'm not gonna do that before I get myself a decent string plate ...
That wood Jackson uses for the JS series (Indian Cedro or something) is quite solid but it lacks of that natural beauty... I wanted a natural finish with tung oil... oh well black is a colour too :P

Thank you a lot for your comments

For your control plate and whatever else, why haven't you tried Dave (Budman68 on here)? He does great work at great prices, good guy too.

Ah, I just looked at his site for the first time in a while, he's not able to do as much as he used to so you may have to wait. For reference though, here's the link:

Oh and some will no doubt flame, but try these for your sharkies:
They look like real inlays as abalone & Mother of Pearl. There're a wide range of stickers for Fret Markers, Bodies, Pickups, & Headstocks. We also custom-make engraved truss-rod covers and position marker with your name on! Enjoy dressing up your guitars, bass & ukuleles!

Looks good. There are string plates and control covers on Ebay right now if you wanted to just buy them.

yeah I know that there is a dude making these parts but I really wanted to make it myself ... I don't want to get my guitar called a partcaster :P ... I want to make the plates myself because I have lots of different materials at home ...

yeah I really need to go on with working on this guitar ... it sucks because it's my only electric guitar and I really miss some heavy riffage xD ... I played my acoustic on open tuning and sang the blues because I was sad how I messed up that guitar haha but it turned out good :P
