  • COW 6 rarity / popularity

Dudes, help me out. I know a guitar is worth what someone is prepared to pay, but I need to find some kind of starting point for my beloved COW 6 in black which I've got to consider selling to finance a fresh outbreak of GAS.

Usually a few quick searches and ten minutes on eBay will turn up a reliable value, but these things appear to be far less common than I'd thought and the range is all over the place. So two questions -

Were these all Japanese made? If there were some USA models, it would explain some of the WTF prices.

There seem to have been very few on the used market. Were they a short run or particularly unpopular? I wasn't paying much attention when they were available new..!

None were USA made. They are around $400-700 depending on color and condition.

For a new dude who doesn't know the acronyms yet, what does cow and gas mean?

I had no idea what a cow 6 was either. After reading that, I am still lost. Picture please?

Man that's about the same price as a regular dinky from that era. And the dinky gives you more features, including a tremolo. I guess you pay a premium for the name?

Quite the opposite, some people prefer a single hum and a string thru bridge.
I feel festive all year round. Deal with it.

Oh I know they do. I think a single pickup on a guitar is sexy as all getout, and I only ever use the bridge pickup on my guitar anyways so I think it would be cool to own a guitar like that. But from a manufacturers cost to build, a cow guitar should be more cheaper... but isn't really.

Active emg and ebony fretboard are desirable specs for many as well
Also mahogany wood and reverse headstock

Is the wood type used in the body important when using an active pickup? I was reading the pro's and cons of active emg's on another site, and someone said that you can get the same sound from a crappy wood guitar by going active. I gues things like sustain would be affected greatly.

As the OP is in the UK I'll convert the prices into proper money .. there was a few 6 string COW's on the bay a couple of years ago , they went between the £250-£300 mark, there haven't been many put up since then.

If I had to hazard a guess , I cant see one going for much more than that now.. beautiful guitar though!

Thanks for the input guys. I was thinking £300-400 would be top whack, but seeing some dollar price tags into four figures threw me a bit.

Maybe I'll hold onto it. It plays and sounds great, and it must be amongst the blackest axes ever made. Not worth adding another to the long list of guitars I regret saying goodbye to when I could shift my DKMG for similar bread and not miss it half as much!
