Im not so sure it's a fake. I had a Korean made with tuners like that. I think the truss cover is a replacement and that's not the original trem. the route doesn't line up. If it's been refinished the original holes for the trem posts or screws could have been filled. I'm gonna dig into the catalogs and see what I find.
Turn the volume to 10 and rip off the knob!

I'm gonna take a stab and suggest that its a 98 js model. I also checked the 99 catalog but it didn't list any JS models so I couldn't double check.

Nope. They were released in 2004.

great, so it's a bizzaro model. I'd be tempted to suggest it was parted together except the neck also has a 98 printed on it suggesting it belongs with the body. Maybe korean back door special? the absence of a serial makes me think factory second or end of run parts.

Don't get me wrong. I'd bet Racer X has forgotten more about Jacksons than I will ever know but, In my experience I've found a couple of pretty constant things.
When people go to the trouble of faking guitars they tend to fake the most expensive models.
When a company has it's guitars made overseas the market gets a lot of mutant mutts floating around because they are about producing as many guitars as possible. It wouldn't surprise me if they got to the end of a run and needed a part or two so they ran across the factory and grabbed a Squire or Epiphone part to finish it up.
It looks like this model will just be vexing until more information is had.

Ah, the old Korean backdoor special; for only $50.00 on top, it's totally worth it.

Nah, Elvis didn't do his research, I also rip it up on the six string now and again. I'm also a mean cowbellist.
