  • NGD questions...

Just got 2 new ones. One is a COW-7. Black, hardtail. Active EMG 81-7 in the bridge. One is a DKMGT hardtail. It has active EMGs in it too. They are an 81 and an 85.
Did both of these guitars come factory stock with active EMG's. I am sure the COW7 did but some of the DKMGT's that I have seen online have EMG-HZ's in them.
Since the DKMGT doesn't have a battery compartment I am thinking the active EMG's were add ons.

The COW definitely came with it, but the DKMGT may or may not have. The original DKMG(T)s came with HZs and an Afterburner. They later changed them to 81/85s from the factory.

My understanding is the earlier DKMGT's had the EMG-HZ and gainboost circuit and that it changed to full EMG's with a delete of the gain boost near the end of production. (2008-9ish I believe is when the change to full EMG's took place)

Mine is earlier and had the HZ's and the gain boost. The HZ's are gone, replaced with Duncans but I kept the gainboost in case I felt the need for overkill or want to use it for solo boosts. There isn't a battery box routed on these ones, there is actually a side cavity routed out in the control area designed to hold the battery. I'm not sure if this changed on the later ones with the standard EMG's, but I don't see them making a wordworking change to production just to make guitarists life easier hehe.

**EDIT : I just checked the catalog scans and it looks like they switched to the EMG's from the HZ's a little earlier. The 2006 Catalog lists full EMG's and mine is a 2005 so it must have changed for the 2006 model year.

I had a DKMG a few years back that came from the factory with active emgs and it did not have a battery box.

How are you liking the 7 string? I would love to add one to the stable, but I would have nowhere to keep it!

A while back I was totally into 7 string guitars. I would say about 2001-2002. I had Jem 7's, Schecters, Ibanez 7620 and 7621'a and Carvin 7's.
I picked this up after not playing a 7 string for almost 10 years and in 5 minutes I was totally comfortable with it.
The Cow-7 hardtail is awesome. Its actually a beautiful guitar. The EMG just kills and is perfect for this guitar. No frills. One volume, one tone.

Take the back cover off and see if there is an extra route for the battery.

Hardtail? Thought those COW's were string thru body with a TOM bridges. DKMGTs too..

But yeah depending on the year with those pups.. Actually the newer ones with EMGs are great. think of it this way. Saved yourself a hundred bucks since now you dont have to upgrade those damn HZs LOL

Yeah, I could have thrown in one of the JB's I have on the shelf, but I ended up buying a new Full Shred to throw in mine. My dealer didn't have a Custom in stock. The full shred sounds good in the guitar and it also plays nice with the boost. I ended up throwing a Pearly Gates I had on the shelf in the neck position, not sure if it will stay or not.

One thing is for sure, the HZ's HAD to go!

The older model DKMG(T)'s with HZ's have three knobs (third is for the afterburner), the newer DKMG(T)'s with EMG 81/85 have only two knobs, this should help you identify what pickups are original

Anyway, hope you are enjoying the two new guitars, cheers

Those only came with one volume, so someone modified it for a tone knob then. Also, it's a string-thru with TOM bridge, not an actual hardtail bridge. Congrats on the new guitars!

If the DKMGT has 3 knobs, then it came with HZs factory. If it only has 2 knobs, then it came with the real EMGs.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure he meant one tone as in no other tonal options. Glad your digging them John. The guy I got the DKMGT from bought it brand new and it had the EMG's in it.

Yea, its 1 volume only and its a string thru.
