  • Help w/manufacture location, Jackson Kelly....

Hey guys, it's been awhile since I've been around. I got a Jackson Kelly bolt-on yesterday at a pawn shop, but I can't tell where it's made. I can't post pics right now. Anyway, it has the original gigantic case that has the round logo on it saying Charvel on the top of the circle and Jackson on the bottom with a headstock between them. IIRC, this case was used on early 90's Charvels and Jacksons. The guitar is 24 frets, no neckplate, "Professional" on the headstock, greenish/gray quilt top (probably foto...anybody know?) black edges and back. Floyd licensed Jackson trem, black hardware. Serial is J0099XX, on a sticker on the back of the headstock. Has Duncan Design pickups. Also has reverse sharkfin inlays. I am thinking/hoping this is Japanese. I am sure this is not new at all, and if it is original to the case, I think it would have to be Japanese, but I have never had a Kelly, and so have not kept up with anything about them. Got it for $225 w/case, which I thought was a steal. Great guitar, btw. Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks guys.

Mid-late 90s Japanese-made (somewhere between 97 and 98). I'm assuming that since it has no neckplate, the bolts are recessed into what look like washers? If so, they're most likely machine screws going into threaded inserts, which makes replacing the neck nearly impossible (or at least a major pain in the ass).

Thanks Newc. Cool, I thought it probably was. Anyway, yes, it does have recessed screws, although they don't look like they are going into a washer or anything. Just looks like they are going into the wood. Either way, the neck is great and there is almost no fretwear, so I shouldn't have to worry about that any time soon. Thanks again.

You can also remove the neck to see what model it is specifically, and maybe even the year.

I think Toejam mentioned he had one of those, but can't recall if it was a KE3 or some other designation.

Cool, thanks man! Wish I had taken off the neck before I put the new strings on it awhile ago.

Standard headstock but reverse sharkies - most likely a mid 90s KE3:

I'd think that's also an old KE3, but I'm not sure that black textured paint is original.

Yeah, they had it marked down to $249 "Clearance" at the pawn shop. However, they will still go lower. I've been getting lots of guitars lately where the pawnshops are actually losing money. Those are the ones I look for, and this was almost one of those. They did make $25 on it, but that's not bad, considering the original price they had on it was $499.

I've also been picking up Korean RG220's and 320's for less than $100, which I think is great. Austin rules when it comes to pawn shop guitars.

Yes, the neck is really thin, like a Charvel Model series neck. I love it
