    2004 DK2 BOF with DK2M neck.

Tragedy struck today as I replaced the stock DK2 neck with one from a DK2M. The DK2 was minty mint. Not a scratch. Not bad for being 8 years old.

However, the DK2M neck appears to be a hair wider than the old DK2 neck, which makes for a tight fit. So tight that it literally had to be clamped into place, and busted the finish from around the neck pocket.

    But, it's a solid fit.

I did have to re-use the original locking nut (seller included the tuners for the DK2M neck, but not the nut), and either the older nuts are a tad shorter or the neck itself has issues, as there's considerable buzzing on the low E, yet plenty of clearance up around the 12th fret.

I also replaced the trem with an OFR, so that might be a factor in the string height up and down the neck.

As well, the high E seems to be closer to the edge of the neck than I'd like, though I haven't had it slip off during normal playing. I thought that may have been from the Floyd as well, but it's the neck; I checked with the original trem and it's close as well. I did pull the neck straight in the pocket as far as it would go, which helped considerably (the string was previously hitting the tapered end of the fret), but I think the nut holes are slightly off-center as well.

Anyway, it's intonated, but the action is higher than I want it. I did tweak the rod (as it needed it) but I may have found a model that the DK2M neck doesn't get along with. By contrast, I've had zero trouble putting them on WRXT and WRMG bodies from 2003 to 2008.

Might drop my Sustainiac into it. Haven't decided yet. The stock singles sound nice enough.

    Matt,

I tried putting gold hardware on a DK2 and it's requiring me to fill and redrill the holes that mount the locking nut. If I don't, the nut is pulled "up" because the holes are too close to the fretboard and they are a little off pulling the neck off to the low E side.

I still have yet to fill and redrill.

I did file the gold nut lower.

Actually, compare the nut to an import nut and you'll probably find you need to shave some off the board length rather than fill and redrill the holes. OFR nuts have a slight angle as they get near the string slots, whereas import nuts simply go straight up.

I used the nut from the DK2 neck, since they're supposed to be the same nut as always (BH3), and always shorter than the OFR nut. There is a feelable ledge on either side of the nut, however, so it's not off by much, though it does feel a hair (literally) narrower than the shelf overall.

May have to shim the nut slightly, and possibly the heel, as there's not a lot of angle to the neck. Then again, it's a Dinky neck on a Dinky body, and one thing I've learned over the years of neck-swapping, it's always better to swap to an entirely different body style i.e. DK neck on WR, KE, or KV body and WR, KE, and KV necks on DK bodies.

My WRMGMs have amazingly low and buzz-free action compared to their original necks, and the one time I put a KVX neck on a DX body, the action was flawless.

Granted the DK neck I put on a WRXT body some years ago required the bridge to be raised incredibly high (both were non-Floyded), but even then, the action was amazing. Needed tall pickup rings like a Les Paul, though

I did the opposite, Dk2 neck on the m body. I have the same issue with the high e being close to the edge. It might have something to do with messing up the necks screw holes when I tried to fit it to a stratocaster body

It doesn't have any playing issues though, quite the contrary, it feels & sounds remarkable.

I'm hoping this will be the one Dinky I actually keep, as I normally don't get along well with Strat-shaped bodies. I think I may have a torso deformity that makes them uncomfy

Ever carry around a box or bundle of 2x4s or something that's not really heavy but awkward? That's what Strat shapes feel like on me - like something's not quite right. Maybe I should learn to play lefty.
