  • Dinky XL Pro

There's a Dinky XL I'm considering on my local CL could probably get it really cheap. I was curious if anyone here has one? And how the quality may compare to a DK1 (or not), besides the fact that the fretboard is rosewood and not ebony. And to be sure these have real MOP sharkies?

Dinky XL is he cream of the crop if its a flat top.
By pro do you mean pro or professional these are two different models
    Really? well screw Mark Twain.

So, if the fretboard is rosewood then its not a pro, but part of the professional line as stated on the headstock. Decent mid range import.

No, I don't think there was a Dinky PRO (just Fusion). So the XL was the top model like straycat said.

        See the 1990 catalog:

Ok, so the top of the line dinky had mid level features? I found it in the 92 catalog. It has mop inlays, how about the logo?

the logo was normal, schaller trem (can't get better than that). Very thin necks but killer guitars.

My 1994 Kelly XL has MOP sharkies but not logo. The rosewood is almost as dark as ebony. And it has the squared baseplate JT580LP. My favorite playing neck of all guitars I've had. If I got along better with the Kelly shape, it would be my #1. XL model Professionals are excellent guitars..

Sorry for the confusion, I put Pro for Professional.

This one doesn't have the MOP logo and looks to have a metal gray or black finish. I can get it for $200 but I have to drive almost an hour to check it out. The seller says there's an issue with the input jack because it's cutting in and out. Just trying to gauge if it's worth my time.

If you decide it is not worth $200 and some gas then let me know where in Mass it is cause I would certainly drive there from southern NH to check it out

I went to check it out, so naturally I ended up purchasing it! It was in quite good shape for its age. I think it spent most of its life in a case. It has a Takeuchi trem which seems to be decent enough. I've never owned a Jackson this old so I had no idea what to expect from the pickups but I was pleasantly surprised when I finally plugged it in. The neck is insanely thin. It's noticeably thinner than my DK1 and the binding is thinner as well. Overall, I'm very glad I took the time to get it.

Right now it's disassembled because it needs a good cleaning and the trem is pretty cruddy. Here is a pic after cleaning/conditioning the fretboard:

I want to go out nice and peaceful in my sleep like my grandfather, not screaming and hollering like the passengers in his car.

Cool, so its basically the predecessor to the DK2. Very nice.

it's the pred to the dx1 that was the pred to the dk2.
