  • Jackson SL3 vs SLX

how does the SL3 compare to say SLX? is it difference in the minor details? i realize they're made in diff countries, which i don't really care about. i'm concerned about the quality... maybe the craftsmanship is japan is better back then but i'm sure indonesia will catchup one day. so is the SL3 MUCH better? i've never played a SL3 but have a few SLX series and love them.

thanks in advance for your opinions!

i was joking. then i found your FS thread... maybe it's not a good time to solicit opinions then from members then... but i'm curious though, esp when there is not too much difference in their price

But the newer trans colored one are closer to the slx, but still they are much better even though they got flatter and the fret board got cheaper looking (really light colored).

SL3 prices have taken a dive since the X series came out. I blame the economy and the lack of binding though.

Binding will do strange things to people.

My 2001 SL3 is a quality beast with a nice slab of quality rosewood, quality flame top and duncan pups, certainly surpasses any X series I have seen in terms of wood and finish quality. But that won't cut it because it doesn't have binding. But I don't really care as I'm not selling it.

Put it this way, would you rather have an old RR5 or a RRXT?

RR5 prices have also taken a dive as well since the X series came out, again, I think due to the economy and the lack of binding, although the last run did have binding.

I have been very tempted by several X series guitars, nothing wrong with them at all, but when I consider the upgrades I will have to do to make them mine, I think I will stick with the SL3, my Parts Star, Pro Mods and Partscasters. I will still get an X series if one comes along and shouts at me, so in general I try to avoid them as my van insurance is due.
You can't really be jealous of something you can't fathom.

thanks. the x series has emg-hs and floyd specials... i swapped out the pickups on mine but there must be a difference with the new emg-hs pups cuz they sounded different than the ones on my older guitars, they sounded very good.

Mine/Yours is older and has a real nice dark fretboard and isn't made from basswood...Now if only someone wanted to know if the ltd 301 was better then something But really if I didn't need the money, I wouldn't sell either!

The X series I have played have been nowhere near the quality of my 2008 SL-3.

I own an SL-3 and an RRX and there is no comparrison. The SL-3 is much better but the RRX is a nice guitar especially for the $$. If I could buy one or the other and there was a $100 difference I would go with the SL-3. If it were more than $100 I would have to think about it.
addicted to Jackson guitars since 1993

my SLX will be here today. I wound up buying one for $300 used on ebay. i hope it plays as great as the burst cherry one i played at sam ash.
The seller said it had just had its frets redressed/crowned so the frets should all be good.

My SLXT is almost as good as the SL3s I've played over the years. The main difference is the basswood body wings on the X series, which doesn't do wonders for tone. However, the biggest difference overall is probably consistency. Any given SL3 is more likely to be a quality instrument than any given SLX, which matters if you're buying online and can't try before you buy.
