This is what is said but I have to wonder if its true. Their cost of manufacture was lower so they could have made more per unit than they did on the USA's. It just seems odd to me that they'd launch an import line, presumably to sell them, and then say "oh man we sold too much".

I very much understand the concept of cannibalizing sales, and maybe they thought they could have their cake and eat it too by only making it so that certain features (ebony etc) were available on domestics, but the belief that it was done only because it was cutting into USA sales seems a bit suspect.

Not bashing the OP... This has been said about pros forever. It's a logical assumption but I just have to wonder if its just that...an assumption, or if someone from that era at Jackson explicitly gave cannibalization of USA sales as the reason.

I love my pros as much as my USA's so I believe it is possible, but I'm not convinced that was the main reason.

I've never seen any actual Jackson employee claiming that was the reason, but it's been a pretty consistent reason everywhere I've looked. I was also told that they wanted the USA made to be the top of the line with no contest at all, and that was a factor into it as well.

I just sold my '93 USA Soloist Custom and kept my '90 Soloist PRO. Because it just has a better feel. Neck is a little thinner front to back and having the carve by the neck/body area being the only definitive differences I saw.
