  • Snakeskin Project

Hello all, been a while since my last project, but I've got another one in the works right now. I'm thinking about doing something snakeskin related, and am interested in some feedback. Same as last time I'm thinking of getting an adhesive vinyl print done, as I haven't been able to find any readily available snakeskin material (real or otherwise) that is large enough for a guitar, realistic looking enough, or made of something other than elastic. If you guys know of any places to score some great looking snakeskin material give me a holler, but if not I'll probably just refine the pattern I've started working on. Enough talk, some pictures below:

I'm really diggin' the purple, but I feel like I should go with the brown just to play it safe. I'm not sold on any of the colors yet, and I'm thinking no pickguard at this point.

Also, here's how the guitar was finished before. I used a chameleon type paint over a black base. It looked pretty cool, but the "binding" was just paint, and I did a pretty terrible job with the clear, so it was just time to do a refinish. Another point worth noting is this body is not a Jackson! It's a "Soloist" body from KnE. You may wondering why I posted here, but I like the style in which Jacksons tend to be finished, and so I think the J-import community can offer some good opinions on looks.

Good job. Go for the first one (copper?) or the purple. But lose the pickguard, makes it look tacky. BTW, which Roland guitar synth are you using with that GK3 pickup?

I like the last one, reminds me of one of the BC Rich's C.C. used in the Fallen Angel video....................or go the green.

No Pickguard! Or not that shape at least. It looks like it's only there to hide a finish calamity.

              That would be the GR-20S.

And I was leaning for no pickguard myself. I agree it looks kind of weird, I was never really able to figure out a decent looking shape for my configuration

Definately no pickguard, looks much better without it. I think a copper color would look cool.

No pickguard, but don't ask me - I think they all look cool and I'd have one of each LOL!

Definitely NO pick guard! Why not paint the snakeskin instead of doing a cheesy vinyl wrap?

If your making it for your own personal collection, why not spend the extra money and get it painted .

Love the rainbow one. Like the guard or use clear plexiglass as a guard.

No disrespect to anyone, but in my personal opinion nothing says cheese more than a snakeskin pattern with completely uniform sized scales. Don't get me wrong, I like the look of the snakeskin Jacksons/Charvels - it looks great - but just not realistic. I'm a bit conflicted with the pattern I've started, as it was pieced together from a real skin, but it doesn't look like a real skin, so that's why I went in the direction of a wild color scheme, rather than an attempt to make it look real. I would much rather spend the money trying to find a real skin than spending it on a paintjob. Again, just my opinion, and again, I do dig the snakeskin Jacksons, just not what I'm currently going for.
