The scratches aren't obvious. I only see them when I hold the fretboard at the right angle to the light. But they are there. I don't think steel wool is a good idea considering the more modern things we have today. Stew-Mac sells fine grit erasers to polish frets if people don't like gorgamyte.

I have the same guitar and I have the same issues that Straycat has - strings are too close to the edge, and the trem claw almost sticks out of the cavity. I'll have to look into a different nut - got a link to where I could get that, Stray?

The only thing I am thinking I might do - get a new pick guard, go H-S, and put a Les Paul style pickup switch, rather than the 5-way blade switch. Maybe go JB / Quarter Pounder or something...

        Anyway, HNGD!
