ASM had exclusive Jacksons made for them, but I don't remember the names of the models.
    96xxxxx, 97xxxxx and 98xxxxx serials oftentimes don't indicate '96, '97 and '98.

Truss rod cover is the wrong shape too. It doesn't really look like a Jackson to me. I have a JDR 94 and it's somewhat similar to that but like a copy of it or something.

Checking for neck pocket stamps are your best bet. Can't guarantee you'll find any, but it's worth a shot.

A Japanese made guitar should have pocket stamps, but that missing sticker on the headstock and those tuners are indicative of a mid '90s Taiwanese made Jackson. I've never seen any other Jackson than Taiwanese with those tuners.

Regarding my earlier statement: That doesn't look like the ASM V models I've seen, but there may have been more than one ASM model? Not sure.

        ASM V exclusive model.

Yes Martin, that's what I've always wondered about. Whether or not my parents got ripped off, or if I got a cheap knockoff instead? I recently found a look-alike model on the Jackson website that didn't have a sticker or serial number. So hopefully that wasn't the case. According to Google, this one is made in Indonesia. Thanks Mudlark, but I didn't get a chance to see those pics you posted! Here are links to my guitar and that other guitar I mentioned:
