    A test to check if the nut is locking or not is:

    Pluck a string on the headstock side of the nut, then grab the string over the neck and gently pull up. If the pitch changes while pulling, the nut isn't tight enough.
    The nut shouldn't be any tighter than it needs to be to pass the aforementioned test.

    That said, I don't use or own Floyds...only string thru and hardtails...so I'm the least qualified to comment, actually.
    96xxxxx, 97xxxxx and 98xxxxx serials oftentimes don't indicate '96, '97 and '98.

      nut problem fixed!!!

      it wasn't the string slipping in the nut, it was the nut slipping ever so slightly on the low e side.

      tightened the two little screws a little bit and its rock solid now

      I can divebomb the poor guitar till the strings lay on the neck, release it and its coming back perfect pitch
