So were you talking about an SL2H or current import SL2? Sorry didn't seem to see an answer in the thread. I have had multiple SL3 (Floyd Model) and multiple USAs. Generally the fit and finish on the SL3 is on par with the USAs. The only differences that I can see are features. The SL3s seem to have lower quality pots and as such seem to get clarity from a nice over haul. The wood choices seem nicer on the USAs as well. Other than that it is really only the cosmetics. I really like the last few years of the SL3 quite a bit. I don't think I have ever paid more than $450 or so for one though.

My experience with my 2011 Japanese Dinky and my 2008 USA Soloist is similar to your thoughts. So far, my MIJ is entirely comparable to the USA as far as playability, aesthetics and performance.
Though, just got a fret level, crown, and polish on my Soloist from a guy who's built guitars for Keith Richards, Sting, James Taylor and other well knowns...and OMFG...what a dream to play.96xxxxx, 97xxxxx and 98xxxxx serials oftentimes don't indicate '96, '97 and '98.

In 2005 and older models had the Jackson Licensed Floyd Rose, the 2006 models and newer had a really floyd rose. The SL3 is a fantastic guitar and retailed for $1599.99 So getting a perfect condition one now for around $1000.00 or less is worth it to me. I own a 2006 model in Transparent Red and it's a killer guitar. I purchased it over a SL1 and a SL2H back in 2006. I also had a 2005 model which had Chrome Hardware and the Licensed Floyd Rose which IMO was not as nice as my 2006. It didn't play as well and it went out of tune where my 2006 model stays in tune.
The New SL models IMO are not the same as the older ones. I played one and they don't feel as good. I'd go with the SL3 and just try to get the best deal you can. If it was well taken care of your gonna purchase one hell of a guitar.
