The catalogs never show every variation.
The only thing that is really out of the norm is the painted neck.

The only Jacksons I can think of with bolt-on painted necks have been the Japanese Christian Olde-Wolbers models, and the late '90s USA JJP (Jackson Junior Paul). I guess they could have done others.

Roswell imports had painted necks, but you'd know if you had one.

However, re-reading the initial post, you found a Jackson 8-string with an 8-inline head? Not the 4x4 head? Now I'm suspicious.

          Yes.

I'd suggest removing the neck and checking for a model name stamped inside, but I doubt you'll find anything in an Indian made model.

          96xxxxx, 97xxxxx and 98xxxxx serials oftentimes don't indicate '96, '97 and '98.

I think the OP is saying his son wants to buy an 8 string and is selling off his previous guitars bought from pawn shops to fund it. The way i read it this jackson is one of the guitars he`s selling to fund it.

Just so that I am not confused on what we are talking about ----

We are talking about the typical Jackson angled headstock, right?

Straight-inline is something else. More like an Ibanez.

An inline headstock just means all tuners in a row on one side. Straight string pull is another story.

There was at least one 8-string with an inline headstock. Though, I believe he was talking about his son trading in one of his Dinky pawn shop guitars with standard inline headstock for an 8.

Schadenfreude, you are correct. He is liquidating some of his assets to get his new dream guitar. I did remove the neck and found some illegible red markings. The only thing we could make out was something close to 54L3 J174. The J174 was the only for sure digits we could positively ID. I'm guessing we just have an unusual JS model. Again Thanks to you all for helping out. You've all been more than accommodating and helpful.

Piannoguy, Yes you are correct. Regular angled head stock (non reversed). I apologize for the incorrect description. Thank You.

You said in post #1 that you checked the stamps.

The question I have is whether the neck's paint looks aftermarket or does it look original, the same quality finish as the body?

wrldeatr (cool name) The paint is the same match in quality and aesthetics. Pretty crazy huh. The neck seems to be the stumper. Painted and not reversed. I'm gonna just tell him that it's some sort of JS model and he shouldn't expect more than 200 on Craigslist if he is lucky.

Could be a special edition for Guitar Center or someone like that. We've seen some strange ones here before.
