Could your 04xxxx be 2005? Anything is possible.

Neck thru serials have been date-coded for the last 26 years. Just seems strange to put 04 on a model in March 2005 based on the date-coding system.

The letter says the SL3 was discontinued in 2006, but they continued for a few more years. Though, the 2006 and newer models had a different tremolo and black hardware.
Essentially, what was discontinued on Jan.1 2006 was the old specs in favour of new specs.
Out of curiosity do we have any idea at what point serials where stamped on neck-thrus? At the start of the build process, when the neck/fret board where made, when the woodworking or hardware where finished, after paint just prior to shipping? If the boards where stamped early in the process could it be conceivable it was maybe stamped late 2004 but not finished and shipped till March 2005? March isnt that long into the year, especially at the speed Jackson work.

I've considered all those good points and then some, Shadenfreud, and I don't know, so they'd only be theories.

I'd have guessed the serial would come at the final stages.
      96xxxxx, 97xxxxx and 98xxxxx serials oftentimes don't indicate '96, '97 and '98.

Final stages is the common sense option but this is Jackson we`re talking about lol. I presume the same would apply to plates, pre-stamped and applied whenever they got pulled from the bins.
