That serial indicates made in India, 1999.
Since I've never seen an Indian model with date/model stamps, I'd guess the neck/serial number are a match (possibly from an early DX10D?)...though the DX had chrome hardware. The body may be Japanese. Just guessin', and probably wrong.
The knobs look slightly closer together than usual. I've seen at least one dealer run limited edition model with differently spaced knobs. I still feel that's a strong possibility.
Could you post a pic of the tremolo?
96xxxxx, 97xxxxx and 98xxxxx serials oftentimes don't indicate '96, '97 and '98.
