Hey there, hoping someone can help. I have two Jackson guitars, one is a DR3 I purchased late 90's, I think it was 99 I got it, I haven't checked the serial but I will at some stage as I'm now curious as to it's age/year. The one that's been bothering me is a very similar model which I acquired more recently.

So it's definitely a dinky body, it's identical to my DR3 but has Duncan Designed humbuckers with a plastic surround whereas my DR3 has the pickups screwed in to the cavity which is visible. It also has a 3-way selector rather than a 3-way toggle that's on my DR3. It's fully black hardware with a Licensed Floyd-Rose, 24 fret reverse headstock with shark fins and a white binding and the neck is noticeably chunkier than the DR3. It basically looks identical to a DXMG but with DD-Hums instead. I've looked through all the catalogs from '96 up to 2010 from Jackson's website but nothing matches.

The serial is 9743193, from reading this post I believe it to be early/mid-2000's, apologies if that's no where near correct!

Image below (hopefully) and any further info hugely appreciated. I'd love to get a model name on it! I realise now that I could take the neck off to check in the pocket but I've not long restrung it. Does it look familiar to anyone? Many thanks in advance.

Has all the specs of a DXMG. The pickups were no doubt changed by a previous owner?
    The serial indicates '05ish.
If the neck pocket model stamps don't say DXMG I'll be more than a little shocked.
    96xxxxx, 97xxxxx and 98xxxxx serials oftentimes don't indicate '96, '97 and '98.

A DR3 is ash and you can see and feel the woodgrain. I have one in my pics, that I owned. They look nothing alike looks like DXMG or DX 10

Dx10d has reverse inlays? My guess is DXMG with swapped pups.

DX10D had reverse inlays, chrome hardware, no binding and a JT500 tremolo.
Unless someone changed the JT500 to a JT580LP and added black hardware and a bound neck.

Awesome, thanks for the reply guys. Yeh I suspected DXMG, not sure about pickup change by previous owner but I think I'll need to de-string and check the neck pocket. My cousin has a DXMG, I may get him over with it and do a side-by-side before I rip off new strings.

Yeh the DR3 is much nicer to play. The neck is immense, love it!

While the guitar is disassembled, take the opportunity to unscrew the pickups and see what labels are underneath them. The labels should identify the specific pickup models. Since they are Seymour Duncan, they should look similar to this:

If it's a DXMG, which seems to be the case, someone changed the pickups.

Aside from a DXMG it could only be a limited run model that didn't appear in catalogues. But, why make what is basically a DXMG with the only difference being the Duncan Designed pups?

Must be blind like you tj. That's a dr3 which is not a gloss black. Unless you think that's a model two beside it, lmao. Don't be a rookie toe, I'll fuck you running.

His pic is of a DXMG, yes, but he says he also has a DR3, read the first sentence of his post.

Your ash DR3 is also pretty nice, but not all DR3 models are ash. The solid colors are basswood.

ha ha, thanks again guys, I'm off work for a long weekend until next Thursday, supposed to be for DIY but I'm sure I'll find time to dig about the guitar room. I'll get a pic of my two side by side. My DR3 is solid gloss black. I still have the Jackson hang tag from it. Will keep you all posted for those that are interested.

Not all DR3 guitars had the "wood grain" finish or direct mount pickups. Some of them even had Professional on the headstock.
