  • MIJ 96/97/98 Serial List

These were all confirmed with date stamps.
I can't/won't be responsible for, or involved in any disputes/arguments that may arise.

If a month or day isn't shown it's because the stamp was unreadable, but the year is most important.

    96xxxxx, 97xxxxx and 98xxxxx serials oftentimes don't indicate '96, '97 and '98.

Perfect! Now if only everyone trying to sell their 00s Jackson as a 90s one actually saw this...

      Mudlark actually posted his list!

      We can die happy now!

To further what Mechayoshi said, I suggest we link people to this thread every time people continue with misinformation (mostly on Facebook guitar groups) regarding these Japanese serial numbers. Hopefully it helps to dilute and eventually replace the misinformation.

Neck thrus are easy. The first 2 digits are the year on most, but not all import neck thrus. So, you have a 2005.
Very early MIJ neck thru models just used the first digit for the year.

To be honest! Newc already did a very comprehensive list on serial numbers. He also came to the conclusion, shit don't always match up. someone was smokin' thee bowl..

Plus, I have a SL4 22 fret soloist that was'nt made in 2000 0r 2001 according to picture from the cat.

Example; where on my old USA king V would it have a number that it stated special 23 fret model

Cool. That makes sense considering the model.

As an aside, according to the catalog, the RR5 is a USA Rhoads (it's really not).

The SL4 was released in 2001, so a 00xxxx or 01xxxx serial would be correct.

I've studied these serial threads for years.
If there's any doubt in what I have to offer, I say I have doubts in what I've offered.

There are oddballs among certain serial formats, but the neck thrus have been as close to perfect as any other format.

I forgot to ask, what about the serials on Kellys, for example: 003808?

Those sticker'd serials only appeared on models without a neckplate...a Kelly Standard for example.
I can't remember if models other than a Kelly had them, but they were only used for short time around '95 give or take a year or so.

That's another great example of a serial that leads people to believe they have some sort of 1990 Holy Grail guitar.
I've had to break a number of hearts online over that one. Some don't take it so well...even after I send them links to the catalogues.

Sorry, bub, there was no Kelly STD in 1990.

Yes, that's what I thought, and it is off my Kelly standard. Early KE3s (with the professional logo) have the same no neckplate design I've noticed . I think mine is 1994ish because it has a square tremolo route for the jt-580lp.

If there's no 'Professional' headstock logo that should be a '99-2000 serial.
                              96xxxxx, 97xxxxx and 98xxxxx serials oftentimes don't indicate '96, '97 and '98.
