Re: My Kelly Star! (So far)

With the ridiculous price increases at the USA Custom Shop, I'm thinking the Japan Custom Shop is the new way to go

They don't sell blanks.

The price is quite reasonable for a guitar from the Japan custom shop!
I don't know if you can call this a "full" custom shop, I did this through the semi-custom order system, where I just said what base model I wanted and what I wanted changed. With a full custom, you start with base price, add 50 bucks for a diff body shape from soloist, add a certain amount for the wood you choose to use, add in the price of your hardware (schaller or OFR, or TOM for some models), add in the price for pickups, and everything else until it's complete, and then you have list price. There is an example on the website of a list of components of a full custom order and their list price is like 200,000 yen which is less than 2 grand by a tad, but of course the dealer gets you a price lower than that. I don't remember what the "list" price was on the guitar I got but when I got a quote before from a dealer other than Ishibashi (though the final price was really close to the same), list was like 170 some odd thousand yen with a solid color. Later on I changed to EDS finish and the sale price jumped up a little, and the catalog lists EDS finish as 20,000 yen, so I think my list price went up to near 190-195 thousand yen, though what I paid was less than that. Also 5% sales tax is added to whatever price you pay from the dealer.
So really a semi-custom comes out to a close "list" price to a full custom, depending what feaures you ask for.

I don't know a lot about the system but it sounds like they have broken down the prices of these guitars to each piece that goes into it and if you want something that differs from the standard line they produce, you just pay a bit extra for the fact that they're setting aside time to make a different guitar, and then you pay the same price you would for each piece of the guitar! What a great way to get custom Jackson stuff!!!

I only wish they remove that ugly Star logo.
By the way, have you guys seen this one?
Japanese made limited RR.It was built in 92.
Check the headstock where it says Grover Jackson.

Btw, is it possible to keep the Japanese Custom thing private, i don't hope to see another GMW case repeating itself. As everybody knows that we have FMIC lurkers here.

Yea especially he is in Japan buying the guitar.
Plus it is not Jackson, it is Jackson Stars.
They are licensed to build these for sure.

'Tis a similar (but not identical) product to what you might get in the US...
Gotta remember this is still a high-end Japanese guitar on the Japanese domestic market, *not* a US guitar. And as I said before, it's not even full custom based on the way I ordered it.
There has been talk on this board of wanting Jackson to allow us to have different options (reverse headstock, inlays, etc) on individually ordered USA select guitars, but you have to go full custom and pay the US custom shop price for that.
On the Japanese market, the factory seems to have devised a system where you can order one of their basic guitars and change things around if you're willing to pay extra and wait a few months for them to get it done.
