Can the JT-500 trem handle string gauge 10-46, and how many springs MIGHT I need for that gauge??? Also, why are most "floyded" guitars equiped with 9-42 string gauges, instead of something like 10-46 and whatnot???

The JT-500 will be fine with 10-46, you'll have no issues at all. I'm using 3-4 springs on my guitars that are currently strung with 10-46 (the difference being mainly how many springs were on 'em when I got 'em). Just string it up, you'll be fine.
