Re: Guitar Xpress Randy Rhoads Limited Edition!

I've got number 3, it just came in on Friday. It's a whole lot of guitar for the money, and without a trem, it doesn't suffer from the Jackson bolt-on neck dip. It sounds and plays awesome, although it would be nice to have a bound fretboard. I can't complain for under $500, though. I love the look of a Rhoads without that ugly pickguard!

The guitar is your standard Rhodes shape, not the LTD. The only thing it shares with the LTD is the pinstripes and back routing.

This guitar definately doesn't compare to the USA Jackson, but it is a step up from the imports from a few years back. The body is alder, not poplar, so the low midrange growl is all there. I'll see if I can borrow a friend's digital camera to get you all picks. If you want the nitpicking, here goes:

--The top of the pinstripe on the bass side has a small, 1/4" long area that didn't get painted black all the way.

--There is a small 2" diameter patch on the back that is a slightly darker shade of ivory than the rest of the guitar. You can only see it with very bright light at a certain angle.

--Standard crappy plastic nut. I had to go to town with a #2 pencil to lube up the nut slots, otherwise strings wound hang in it after the larger bends.

I actually kinda like the rosewood on a bolt-on, since it adds back some of the warmth you lose from the neck joint. And without the binding, you could always do the pull the string around the back of the neck trick. The quality of the rosewood is a lot higher than it used to be--none of those patches of lighter wood. Over all, it looks like the quality of the imports is coming back up again.

Wow... that actually looks better than I imagined. If I hadn't ordered my custom XTRR I'd really get one of these!

It seems that Guitarexpress has them in stock at this point.
Yea, I agree. It loosk so much better than the image Guitarexpress posted.
That input jack has to be replaced with Strat type input though.
