• selling my charvel for a jackson - but which one?

hi all

i'm thinking about selling my charvel model 3 for a jackson, but i cant quite decide which one. i want to sell the charvel (H-S-S obviously) because i am intensly disliking this pickup configuration, and because it doesn't quite cut it for the music i play now (originally, i bought the charvel for playing lighter metal stuff like ozzy or judas priest etc, but that was before i started playing in bands (one is a cover band ranging from dream theater to slayer, the other one is more like death/thrash metal)).

so basically, what i need is a dual humbucker setup. the guitar does not REALLY need to have a floyd rose, but if so, then it's got to be a quality one. so it is either a good one, or no floyd at all. the shape should be either a V or a classic superstrat shape, so no warrior or whatever, alright?

my main problem is that i dont know how much money i should spend. the charvel should sell for 250-300 euro (with case), so my wallet would be happy if the jackson costs around 4-500 euro. on the other hand, i'm not sure if i should spend the extra money and get a higher quality guitar, something in the 1000 euro range.

the lower priced guitars i'm interested in are:
KVX 10 (440 euro)
RR 5 (around 480 euro)
DXMG (470 euro)

the higher quality ones are the DKMG or the SLSMG

so what do you think is the better solution, especially for playing in a band and doing shows (as i said above, only quite heavy metal)?
i'm not afraid of ebay, but somehow i've rarely seen a good deal for a jackson.
it would be cool if it came with fairly good stock pickups, because spending 500-1000 euro on a guitar which needs a pickup change to be usable live SUCKS

any input is greatly appreciated

I got an SL2 from Junior to my door for 780 euros total.

((and that includes 200 euro importtax I had to pay here in **** Belgium))
You took too much, man. Too much. Too much.

200 euro tax? whoa...thats a LOT.

and no, i have not considered any other charvels yet. actually, i dont know a whole lot about charvel guitars. when i saw my model 3 on ebay i just kind of went for it without thinking too much about it. i was like "well, i dont own any charvel guitars, and this one is fairly cheap, so what the hell"
but what i know about them by now, is that they are really really nice guitars for like 80's shred or 80's metal in general, but unfortunately they dont quite cut it for the really heavy stuff. i know, i could swap the pickups for some EMGs, but there is something about the feel of those guitars that just screams " 80's " !!! If you want thumping low end supergrind punch I'd consider somethign Mahogany.

sl2hMAH would fit the bill, but you'd have to spend more to get one, but quite a versatile guitar.

If you want mahogany do not forget about the Charvel 750XL and the Jackson Archtop Pro.They might be pricey but are top of the line guitars that DO rival USA Jacksons. If you are willing to hunt one down they are worth it.

If you're that sure about the 750XL's still. After seeing Travis's (or someone's) thread about his XL not being mahogany...

hey Fragle,
a RR 5 = 480,- euro??? i think you mean the RR 3.
RR5 kosten um die 1150,- euro in deutschland.

go for a model5 or early dinky reverse or something like that. a soloist AT pro would be too expensive here in germany, and they are hard to find.
a charvel model A (or was it the A+ with dual hum?) would be cool too.
if you think about buying a guitar from the states, keep in mind that you´ll have to pay 13,5% (steuer und importzoll) under 350.- euro declaration and if it´s more than you´ll have to pay 16% MWST and 3,9% Tax for e-guitar.

Well the two trans finish 750s (and AT pro) I have are definitely mahogany, they are very heavy and you can see the grain of the wood. The solid finish is lighter so maybe they used something else(or just a lighter piece of mahogany).

Re: selling my charvel for a jackson - but which o

umm...where did i say that i want a mahogany guitar?

joe web: dammit, is the RR5 THAT expensive? i was indeed talking about the RR5 (because of the tune o matic bridge), but it seems like i confused its price tag with the RR3 :/

and no, i dont think i should buy one from the US....as you said, too expensive.

so you guys are saying i should go for a more expensive one? somehow it makes complete sense, really....especially because i forgot to mention that i want this guitar to become my new main guitar (at the moment, my main guitar is an esp seven string, which is a pain in the ass, because i NEVER use the damn seventh string when playing with a band. i'm only using it because it is the only guitar i have that is suited for the music i play in those bands. but even though it does not limit my playing, the added weight and neck size makes me feel unconfortable after a few hours of playing six string songs)

so, if the rr5 is that expensive, i won't consider it any longer. i did some more internet research, and the dxmg is out of the list, too. so at the moment it is
kvx 10
slsmg
charvel 750XL ( not sure about that one, i dont know anything about it)

the kvx seems to be pretty nice, even though it is rather cheap. i remember racer x saying good things about it. furthermore, i like the kind of straight forward design....two hums, no trem, six strings, and thats it. i bet if i changed the pickups for an EMG 81/85 combo it would be a fairly nice guitar. i'd have to try it out, though, because i'm not sure about the upper fret access....especially the 20th-22th frets on the lower strings seem to be quite difficult to reach

fragle

ps: superfly: i dont quite know what you mean...when compared to slayer, malevolent creation, kreator etc., judas priest is definitely not even close in terms of heaviness....or maybe you dont even call judas priest metal???

If your Model 3 plays nicely but you don't like the pickups, then I would do a pickup swap. You want a humbucker in the neck at least, so you might want to consider the Seymour Duncan Hot Rails, which is a single coil sized humbucker. The rest is up to you. forgett the charvel 750XL! nice guitar but out of your pricerange. the last 750XLs i saw on ebay.de were sold for alot of money and like the jackson AT pro they are hard to find here in germany.
