• EMG HZ microphonic?

I am trying to find out what is wrong with my setup because I have way to much uncontrollable feedback. I believe it's in my guitar, which is a MIJ DXMG with the EMG HZ(3?) pups. I can hold my strings quiet but it keeps squealing. What is wrong? Are these microphonic? Is it possible to take 'em apart for potting? I am not that experienced with these problems so who can help me out? And are there more people who have/had this problem?

I don't think it's the EMGs, i have the same guitar with same pickups and i've never had that problem.

EMGHZ's are very quiet pups. Yes they are HZ3.

Have you or someone else ever removed them at all?

I once hooked the clip onto the neck pickup backwards and it was very noisy. All I did was reverse it and it was fine.

Argh! The feedback is WICKED! I haven't removed them ever. I didn't have the problem with my former SS Crate amp, but now I do. I cannot imagine it's something else than my pups. Once the volume is turned down it stops and I bet that I can take my strings off and plug in my guitar and it'll still squeal.

So what amp are you using now?? You said you didn't have the problem w/your SS Crate...so it could be a tube, if you are currently using a tube amp.

Maybe there's some loos wire or something. My H3's have never did that on me.

I use a 50W tube amp (Randall RG50TC). When I tap on my pups they sound a pop. Should they do that? I haven't been able to acces my tubes to tap 'em yet. Maybe tomorrow.

try running a diff guitar thru the amp.if it's quiet you know it's not the amp.

sounds like the tubes dude , hz's [h3's and h4's]are totally sealed and aren,t open coils so the chances of them ever going microphonic are very very very slim . //Steve

Re: EMG HZ microphonic?

Right. I gently tapped with a pencil on each tube when running hot. Dead silent. I have no clue whatsoever. I never noticed how quiet this amp is by itself, but it really is. Until I plug-in my DXMG. I use one of the best cables out on the market (Tasker; Neutrik plugs) so this can't be it. Does anyone have a comment on the pops I get when tapping the pickup covers?

P.S.
At the moment I don't have another amp available to test my guitar with. Vice versa, I have another guitar but that one squeals even when I only look at it. UNPLUGGED!

Re: EMG HZ microphonic?

You have a microphonic preamp tube for sure. Try switching the preamp tubes around. Preamp tubes are cheap and you should have spares anyway. Go get some new ones and solve that problem. EMG-HZ's cannot go microphonic because of thier construction. There is no way for the coil windings to loosen up. They are completely sealed.

Re: EMG HZ microphonic?

I haven't got ANY money at this moment for new tubes, maybe in a couple of days. I switched the preamp tubes around but the result is the same. I have made a little soundclip of what the feedback sounds like so you might take a listen if it could clear things up. The only problem is that I have no clue how I could post it here... Any help? I'd appreciate it!

Ok,

This is the mp3 of IZE feedback.

It sounds like too much gain to me, but beyond that i'm lost.
Maybe Pete (twisteramps) can provide some help here.

This is recorded at bedroom volume! It gets really bad if I crank it up. The amount of gain isn't even halfway, it is moderate. You can hear me switching between neck- and bridgehum. I hold my strings comletely quiet except one time to hear the difference with the other feedback.
