• A sad day for The Steve Man.....

I was carrying my Kelly Star back from a jam session (not a very good session, by the way.. not bad but not great) and changing trains at Shibuya station.
As I was going up the stairs to get on my train, there was this stupid old fart in front of me who decided to try to scale the last few steps a bit faster than he should have. I had the guitar in its gig bag hanging on my right shoulder-- the guy tripped, dropped his bag right in front of me, causing me to trip slightly. Guitar contacted the ground.. not very hard, but hard enough I guess..
On the train I discovered that the gig bag at the corner had a slit opened up... upon further investigation, I was horrified to discover that a substantial chunk of paint, as well as a little sliver of wood became the casualties of that stupid little moment.
It seems the guitar's playability isn't affected, and the damage is on the back-ish side of the wing so if I'm holding it in playing position, an observer from the front wouldn't see it, but this is going to haunt me.

How does one cope with such a crappy incident?
Can/should I get this repaired?

Sucks, dude. You should have checked for damage immediately, and made Old Fart-san pay.

I know you walk everywhere over there; I'd still consider a HSC, especially for a pointy like the KS.

I am sorry to hear this.
Things happen and since you are playing your guitar often and carrying it around in a gig bag, there is always a risk of getting damaged especially you are in the busiest city on the planet.

Maybe next time, I'd recommend you to carry your guitar in a hardshell case even it is a pain to do so or wrap the body and neck of the guitar with bubble wraps and keep it in the gig bag while you are walking around.
Also put a lock so the zipper of the gigbag wll not open.

Yeah.. I thought about it but the dedicated hardshell costs a pretty penny (like 180 bucks!) and actually takes a couple months after you order it, so I passed at the time..

And it would be pretty damn heavy to lug around with me.. I tried it once with the Kramer/Kelly when I first got here and it was such a bother that I got a backpacker gig bag (thick as hell one, at that) so I carry it more easily.

Is there anything I can do for this, or should I just live with it?

hmm two pieces seem to have come off, one larger, one much smaller.. I found the larger piece in the case, not sure about the smaller one.. that still leaves a nasty gash in the finish if I do put those pieces back, but better than nothing I guess

Why not contact the dealer you ordered it from?

Call it charector and claim to your buddies that you got from some guy who got it from some famous death metal guy and he did the damage on stage while playing a show at some run down concentration camp in Europe opening for Slayer.

Just kidding dude! Hopin the jokin would cheer ya up.

My brand new DK2LE #1 of 24 got a 1/4 inch chunk gouged out of it when a tech at the local shop was reinstaling the bridge and it flew off the springs. They saved the divit and fixed er up, refinished, perfect color match and all at no charge. Brand new limited run Jackson and 2 weeks after I get it it gets damaged. I'm totaly okay with it. The Kelly Star is more or less limited too as they don't make em anymore.

I know a place here in New Mexico that has a trans-blue flame maple top kelly with a broken headstock $125 bucks.

Check your PM for the contact info.

Hope this helps.

I'm sure a local luthier can fix her up. Good luck!

Dude, that sucks. I have known quite a few people that "play better with ugly guitars, and look better with pretty ones." Seriously, all gigged axes get a little beat up. I would just save all the chunks in a safe place for now. It will most likely happen again. when you are ready to retire or resore it, take out all the chunks and have some good do the work. I do feel for you, that REALLY sucks! It's to bad you can't go around beating old farts over the head with a guitar after they jack it up! Hey look at it this way, Rock isn't supposed to be pretty!

oh, I forgot, I know a guy that put swivel hook on the sides and end of his HSC so he could hook straps to it. He straps it on his back so he can ride his bike with it. That may be an option since you are on foot. Rock on!
