A hardshell case big enough to hold a Kelly Star strapped onto one's back would be a sail. If a strong gust of wind came up, it would blow you from Shibuya to Fukuoka.

And BTW Steve Man, I feel for you. I know it is gut wrenching to have your axe get dinged.

I am investing in a 600-700 dollar "gigging" bass so I can leave my prized hand-made Roscoe bass at home. I would freak if anything happened to that bass given what I spent on it.

Thanks for the PM Jon! Right now I'm still in Japan for about five more months so I can't do much at the moment though [img]/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img]

I went ahead and went to Ishibashi to consult with them on it.. they called a local repair guy and he told 'em to call Chushin Musical Instruments (The factory that makes Jackson Stars stuff, located in Nagano), so I decided to leave it with Ishibashi and they're gonna send it back to the factory, the factory's gonna take a look at it and give me a call with how much it's gonna run, then I can decide whether or not to have 'em go ahead and fix it.
It'll probably cost quite a bit but I might go ahead and do it with my tax refund money comin up.
I guess it's gonna take a week for me to get a quote, and if I decide to let 'em go ahead and fix it, it'll be about a month.. and if I decide to keep it as is, it'll take a couple days to get it back and I pay a small fee. I guess if I don't fix it it's cool, the guitar is still totally playable.

I'll post pics of the wound later.. I did snag a pic before takin the guitar to Ishibashi, just didn't bring my SD card with me tonight.
The chipped wood is like half the size of a penny.. I guess not that big.

Sorry to hear about that. I remember when I first saw the pics you posted. That guitar is awesome. The EDS and maple board looks incredible on that. The first ding/damage on a guitar is pretty tough to take sometimes, especially when it's someone else that causes it. But for all the time, trouble and cost of having it repaired, I think I would just live with it. Think of it as an interesting story to tell of its history in the future.

Actually this isn't the first wound... the top (longer) wing has a little finish scar at the tip from when I was in a rehearsal studio and made the mistake of putting it on a stand that was a little too close to the ground.. like within a week of getting her!

I'm gonna go ahead and wait for the quote on how much to fix this.. if I feel like paying and waiting I might get it fixed, or I might go ahead and leave her as is..
From the front, while I'm playing, she still looks perfect since the crap is on sort of the back-ish side of that tip.
If I go ahead and go for the fix, I'll be without my baby for a month but I have backup so I'll live.

I think if you like the guitar and plan to keep it, you should get it fixed.

I actually like buying used guitars with a ding or two, it saves me having that terrible momement when you realized you do it to your own guitar. And you know you are going to ding it or worse some day.

Then, it always amazes me that some of the coolest guitars are the totally beat up main axes of some guitar hero.

If this was my other guitar (mutt that I had put together with old parts) I'd go ahead and leave it as-is, no biggie.
However this is a custom order neck-thru sweet-as-hell axe.. just got it a few months ago, so I do want to get it fixed.
And yeah I love the guitar-- she's a keeper for sure!

I know this little gash isn't anything huge but I love this axe so I'm gettin 'er fixed, even if it means paying more than I probably should for it... just don't wanna let this happen again!! I'm gonna work on getting a hard case if I can afford it.

Some touch up paint would make that alot better...to the point where it's not really noticeable...and with the $300 you save from doing it yourself, spend $100 on a Kelly case (you can find used ones on Ebay from $50-75) and you're still $200 in the positive to put towards different pups, or new gear.

I know 300 is a lot to spend on it but I'm gonna go ahead and do it.. I'd prefer not to do a do-it-yourself-er on this particular guitar. You're right I could save money but I'd rather just have it done professionally.

Unfortunately she won't fit in a Kelly case.. I had a rectangular case I was using for my Kelly and the KS body won't fit in there, the top wing is a little too long. I think I'm gonna get a KS case from Jackson Stars here.. gonna need a case to carry it back to Oregon in July anyway, and that won't cost much more than shipping it back in its soft case would.

This repair isn't worth the 300 bones...
Yeah it's a custom guitar and it's beautiful and I want it to be perfect... an accident happened and it's no longer perfect. Not the end of the world. She still plays like a dream, sounds sharp, and looks good! This damage is ugly but doesn't kill me... I think I'm gonna see about cancelling this fix and getting her back in my hands where she belongs soon!
I don't have the supplies or any place to do touch up paint now but I might think about that when I get home....
