Maple tops on imports - KV3

How big are the maple tops on imports? Im guessing they are only thin laminates, but im curious! I have a KV-3

Laminates or photoflame. If it moves, it's a laminate. I've got a PC3 that has a laminate and the finish is too dark for such a thin top, but you can see it move underneath.

The maple "tops" on most of the USA line are thin laminates too. The PC1 has a decent piece of maple on top, but nothing like a Les Paul.

Yeah, typical USA thickness is like 1/8inch or smaller.

When you tilt it in the light the flame or quilt should move like a hologram. If it doesn't move, then it's a photolaminate.

Does anyone else find it peculiar that Jackson uses such a thin layer of maple, even on their USA models? Is this done so as not to affect the original tone that Jackson's have?

Beats me. I thought a maple top only affected the acoustic tone. I do wish they'd get a better set of flame tops, though. The quilts on the Collens are nice but they've used the same flame maple tops since 1980, and it's entirely too tight of a grain IMO. It looks more like a wrinkled sheet than wood [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]
I think they're trying to keep that Vintage Fender/Gibson look.

The PC-1's and SL2H MAH's are the only two in the USA Select Series that have a 1/8th top. the rest are just a very thin laminate I believe.

My ´97 DK-1 also has a 1/8" top, it´s actually even a hint thicker....

The main reason the top is kept so thin is to add cosmetics while not butchering teh tone (read "brightening")...

Contrary to what some believe, ALL guitars are acoustic....some use large air filled boxes for amplification, others use a conglomeration of electronig doodads.....take ANY guitar, change something like scale length, fretboard wood, or even something as "miniscule" as string brand, and you WILL hear a difference if your ears aren´t shot / you´re really listening....

"Only Affects acoustic tone" or similar things are therefore a bit misleading, because your electric tone is 100% dependent on your acoustic tone [img]/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img]

I love the top on this guitar. It's a DK2GC. The top is very thin. Here are some pics. Because of the "natural" color you are able to see the edge.

The top on my KV2 is really thin. Looks to be about 1/16th in the pickup route.
