What's the deal with "Grover Jackson" guitars?

I saw one that had that script on its headstock.

Were they made prior to the association with Charvel?

Were they made after the sake of Jackson to Fender?

Were they just a different way of logoing them during a certain period, and if so, what period?

They've been around for a while, and were only available in Japan. If I remember correctly, they were founded by Grover after he left the company.

Those are Jacksons built for the japanese market. The name Jackson was already registered trademark there, so they had to pick something that made the name different. Thus "Grover Jackson" and "Jackson Stars".

I thought that something like that may have been the story behind it. Makes sense that it has to do with names and licensing rights etc etc.

And, for what it's worth (in answer to your first question), "Charvels" came years before Randy Rhoads's guitars with "Jackson" on the headstock. These were technically Charvels - indeed Randy himself referred to them as Charvels.

I was under the impression that they are just "Jackson Stars" now in the Japanese market.

There are still Grover Jackson models on the walls too, but not as many.

I think they are used if not NOS.
They have been discontinued for last several years.

That makes sense... Stars has both the neck-thru and bolt-on zones covered these days.

One thing that doesn't make sense is that they can't name their MIJ guitars for domestic sale just Jackson...
I've seen some shops that carry USA Jacksons... (they charge way too much for 'em though)

Yeah, there's a pretty sweet-looking one on ebay right now. Do a search for Grover Jackson.
