That Rhoads 7 is awesome!!! Nice job.
I believe they also made some Kelly 7s around the same time as the Rhoads models.

I don't know about JT-580 equipped DR7's but, TOM string thru DR7's have alder bodies. Very nice tonal response.

An Ibanez rG7620 can be had for 350, and a replacement all Mahogany body (if you don't like the basswood) is another 250 tops. It's a great trem, too.

LOL, i have the same problem, but with the scale length, every seven I´ve played with a 25.5 I´ve always found the b string too farty.... The only sevens that sound right to me are baritones....

It's all a trade off, because high b and e strings on a baritone seven never sound right to me. I just can't seem to make them scream.

Heh, I don't like 27" scale 7 strings 'cause they sound too much like a bass to me. I've been interested in the 26" scale, though, seems like it might be a good compromise...

Yeah, Carvin uses an Original Floyd on their 6-strings and only a licensed version on the DC727 and 747. They've been using that for awhile before the OFR-7 was available. Not sure if they'll switch to the real deal or not, but they still use the cheapo one.

[/ QUOTE ]

That's correct. Even though the 7-string OFR is available now, I believe Carvin's reason for not using them is that they are harder to get ahold of than the 6-string versions. In fact, I believe they are made by Floyd Rose's own operation, rather than by Schaller, as most of the 6-string OFRs out there are.

One thing that sucks about the Carvin 7's is that their routing for the trem exactly fits the TRS trem that they use, including the shorter sides of the baseplate, so you couldn't fit a 7-string OFR on one without doing some routing work on the body. Re: 7-strings

What I hate about Carvin is that they call themselves a custom shop when they are most definately not. They will not give you a bridge that they do not normally offer, even if you provide it for them. They would not build me a guitar with a Kahler, even if I provided it, and I'm sure they wouldn't build you a guitar to fit a 7-string OFR, even if you provided it.

That's true, but then if they did true custom jobs, their prices would be 2 or 3 times as much as they are now--basically just like a Jackson or ESP. Carvin can charge lower prices because their guitars don't require as much individualized effort to make. They do have a pretty impressive list of options, I think. The big problem for me is that they don't install third-party pickups, like Duncan or DiMarzio. I bet they would sell a lot more guitars if they did, and it wouldn't be any more trouble to install a Duncan than it is a Carvin pickup.

Carvin's got a damn fine list of impressive options. Where else can you get a USA-made guitar for so cheap with your choice of options? They're more like a
Semi-Custom Shop that gives you a choice of ebony, maple or rosewood fingerboards, choice of medium-jumbo, jumbo or low-wide frets, any kind of neck or body wood (maple, alder, koa, mahogany, walnut, even laminated bodies with your choice of three different woods), style of bridge (TOM/stop tail, TOM/string-thru, hardtail, Floyd, Wilkinson), pup configurations such as H, H/S, H/S/H, H/H, H/S/S, even their Bolts are routed H/H/H. They'll even do different wiring configurations that fall under their "Option 50" where they'll charge you only $50 for things such as no tone control, a five-way blade on their H/H models so you can get coil split options without a mini switch, just about any color you want as long as they can mix it with whatever existing paint they have in stock.
