• 7-strings

I'm interested in Jackson 7 strings lately, those Dinky style DR-7s or something. I've seen them on eBay with good price.
How do they sound? How realiable they are? Most of them are with DDs but I can change them for real ducnans anytime. I have special interest in those with Floyd-Rose but most of them are with hard-tail on eBay.
Also I have notcied that some of them are with basswood and some are with alder bodys. Basswood ones are cheaper than Alder. If I buy one I go with alder, but I also want to know what are the differences between the alder and basswood 7-strings besides they have made with different materials.
So what are your toughts?

I'm not really sure that's the case, I think they are all basswood.

Yeah, I thought they were all Asswood, too - that was one of the reasons I didn't like them.

My cousin just bought one at a pawn shop for about 300.00
He seems to be having a hard time getting used to it so i recomended him just de tuning like i do with a few of my 6 string jacksons. But i guess he wants to check it out and see for himself.

Oh, I play 7 string all the time - the adjustment's a little bit of a pain, but one day it will just suddenly make sense.

I just didn't like the import Jacksons, tonally and playing-wise. Stay away from the DX7, especially. Yuck.

Are you sure about the basswood thing--my old DR7 sounded very much like alder, and I've had way more than enough basswood guitars over the years to know the difference. My DR7 was a very crisp, bright-sounding guitar--actually, a *great* sounding guitar. I didn't think the frets were well enough finished for my purposes, but it was a decent little guitar, and certainly good value for what they are selling for now.

As far as the Floyded versions go, they have that crapass Takeuchi trem on them, so you'd probably have to install a Tremsetter to get any kind of tuning stability.

I noticed that a bunch of imports switched from basswood to alder a few years ago. The DK-7, DK-27, and all the X-series guitars (DX10, KVX10, RX10, WRXT), which sprouted shark fins in the process.

Since I only have a Fender 7-string hardtail, I wonder if anyone can compare the neckprofile and string spacing with one of a 7-string Jackson? The 7-string Rhoads for example?

Yeah, I think maybe the first year DR7s - when they only had the Floyd - were basswood, and maybe they were alder later.

I know the first one I played was either basswood or the crappiest piece of alder ever.

Re: 7-strings

While the alder on the imports is much different from the USAs, I'm guessing it was basswood. I've got a couple of alder bodied imports, and they sound pretty good with the right pickups.

I don't like the DR7, but I think that is all your fault. I played your custom shop Soloist back when we both practiced in Falls Church, and it ruined me for other seven strings.

It's been known to do that. I've played a couple of 7s that were close - in fact, I own one - but the only ones I've played as good as it are the two the guy on the other side of the stage has.

I can't argue with that, since I've played a whole bunch of Matt's guitars as well, although it isn't the sevens that really stand out. There is this one RR, and I think you know the one I'm talking about...

For a very good import 7-string, go Schecter. I recently got a 007 Elite H/S version and love it! It's string-thru with a locking Tone Pros TOM bridge, and it even has Grover tuners, mahogany body and neck. They say it's set neck, but it looks almost like a neck-thru to me with the way the heel is. The Duncan Designed pups were a little weak in output but really didn't sound bad. I actually upgraded to a Duncan Custom 7 and a DiMarzio Blaze single for the neck.

It is a set-neck, toejam. They wait for the glue to set, and sculpt it like a neckthru.

Yeah, I've been pretty impressed with them, their quality seems to be better than the other import 7s.
