Re: 7 strings

Yeah I almost ordered the COW from Music123 because they have it's specs listed as neck-through. Then I checked around and sure enough they are bolt-ons

      Re: 7 strings

I've had a couple Ibanez RG7's over the years - one 7620 and one 7621. Both of them seemed to lack a certain character, much like my old RG470 missed as well. Mahogany or Alder/Poplar seem to have a tone much more suited to my tastes. I do know some people love basswood though, so I have a feeling it just never jived with me.

The COW 7 is interesting...I wish it was a neckthru as well, because I'd probably be all over it right now. For now I'm trying to decide if I want to save the cash for a Hellraiser or grab a used Blackjack.

Jeff Loomis seems to dig both the C7 and 007 Blackjacks, so there's a pretty good endorsement.

He also plays C-7 Hellraise nowadays.

I'd go Schecter or Carvin... unless you prefer a thinner neck like an Ibanez.

Yeah, I just got an all-Koa Carvin DC747 off eBay a couple of weeks ago. It's a very nice seven, and has a great-feeling neck--slightly thicker than an Ibanez, but not nearly as thick as you'd find on a Schecter.

I've heard the Carvin 7s have slightly thinner necks than the Schecters. I really dig my Schecter 007 Elite and don't think it's really all that thick, and I've got smaller hands, but I guess it could be a problem for people who aren't used to 7-string necks and want something thinner. I've had a few 6-string Carvins and really loved them. I wanted to get either a DC747 or 727, but it's not in my budget now, so the 007 Elite works great for me, definitely more enjoyable than the Ibanez RG7620 I used to own.

No, the Schecter necks aren't unreasonably thick, but definitely more so than most, in my experience. The Carvin sevens seem just the right thickness, from the guitars I've tried. Jackson sevens are also pleasing that way.

My Fernandes Revolver Pro 7--now *that* has a thick neck. Very playable one, though. Overly thin 7-string necks are kind of a problem for me--I find it even harder to grab the high E and B for bending on them than I do on a 6-string Wizard-type neck. The angle that my hand is forced into is all wrong, I guess.

Same problem I had with my last RG7621. It was hard to add any sort of vibrato to a note or even bend because of the way my hand was angled - it just wasn't comfortable at all, and my wrist would start to hurt after playing for a while. And this was with the guitar either in the classical position sitting down or strapped up above my waist standing up.

I'd agree - I love the neck on my Soloist 7, and the Washburn 7 I have is pretty good, too - and neither is really "thin". When I play the Ibanez 7s, the neck's too thin, and my hand angle is all wrong - I find my hand fatigues really quickly, and that I have bend accuracy issues.

For perspective, my '88 Dinky has one of the really thin ebony necks on it, and I have no issues with it. It's something about the width of the 7 string neck, and the angles involved - a little thicker seems to be better.

Obviously, I'm a bit biased, but before you rule out the Jackson COW 7, play it. The guitar has great tone due to the REAL (not Nato like other imports) Mahogany body and neck. That, along with the ebony fingerboard and EMG make for monster tone. COW is now using that guitar for recording instead of his Jackson USA customs.

Hmm. No offense, but then his USAs must not have been as good as mine is. The COW is probably a fine guitar, I'd just prefer it to be maple/mahogany/ebony, personally. Well, and to have a neck pickup, but I'm picky like that.

                                Re: 7 strings

I'd say play the Jackson the Schecter and a Carvin (any Carvin) if you can find em and then decide. All 3 are fantastic guitars. The Schecter is probably the cheapest for the quality but I've heard the jackson sig imports are truly fantastic imports along the quality of the old model series charvels. Fine praise indeed. And Carvin makes fantastic guitars, no denying that and a KOA 7 string would be pretty hard to beat, however KOA has dropped off alot of Carvin's custom charts because of availability. Some models still have the option, many don't. However the neck shape for Carvins and some other small things may mean they aren't the guitar for you. I'd say your safest choice would tbe Jackson or the Schecter. '

As John said, definitely play the guitars (both the Jackson and the Schecter should be easy to find at your local GC etc) because you just never know which is gonna feel good to you until you sit down and play on it.
