I think you'd get more of a response in the USA section(?). I'm guessing more people there have experience from both imports and USA made Jacksons.

I have seen people claim that there's a significant tonal difference between say, the RR5 and the RR1T - that the RR5 sounds mushier somehow. I think we'd need to get Eric (AlexL) in here to shed more light on that.

I dont know how you would get more response's in the USA section when your asking about Imports, but my RX10D is made of Alder and sounds great. Just slap some real SD's in there and your ready to go......PLUS you wont take a beating on re-sale..

I think if you are concerned with the quality of wood your guitar is made of, you don't need to be buying Import Jacksons.

As long as its not BC Rich we are talking about I think Chuck is right (no one should have to suffer with Agathis) but since Jackson seems to use nothing worse than poplar and basswood for bodies, I don't think the quality of the wood itself is really an issue. The oddest sounding wood I've seen was on a JS-20. Some wood called "Indian Cedro". I have no idea what the hell that is. But that seems to be the only guitar from their current line which uses it. So eh.

Re: Wood Quality of current Imports

All the Japan made imports are currently made with alder bodies. That alder is sourced from North America, primarily Canada, just like the wood for our USA product. All of the India made guitars have the Indian Cedro (Cedar) bodies. This is actually a great sounding wood. 2 years ago we built a Soloist SL2H with a cedar body and neck, Duncans, and a Floyd. The sound was amazing. The guitar resonated in your hands like a live animal Unfortunately, the market for USA made guitars is fairly obtuse in accepting non-standard woods like that, so we can use it on a custom piece, but we won't be putting Cedar into any existing USA production models.

And my wood is good too.

The aforementioned cedar soloist is hanging in John's closet, making his clothes fresh and moth-free.

Re: Wood Quality of current Imports

Hrm, doesn't cedar have similar problems to pine? Personally I suspect most guitarists don't care what the wood is. People paying for a USA guitar though might, so you have a point there. That wasn't meant to be any indictment of that wood just that I have never heard of it being used before and I've played alot of different woods so it took me by suprise. Now I'll have to find one of those and play it .

Though actually the jackson I have may be made of this wood! Its from India, its very light its a Kelly model from about 6 years ago I think. Has sharkies. I always thought it was poplar but maybe its this Cedro. Its my favorite guitar actually, I did alot of customization for it and though I have guitars much more expensive, its always the one I come back to.

Its a shame about nonstandard woods getting snubbed because some of the best tonewoods out there are ones you don't see used often and I don't mean woods like Koa and Korina. When was the last time you saw a production model guitar made with bocote, padouk or sapele? Wonderful tonewoods all but alot of people have no idea what they are.

Re: Wood Quality of current Imports

Indian Cedro is not exactly the same as Cedar or pine. Pine is used in furnitre all the time and is a great wood, althouh it is soft, thus not used much in guitars.

That cedar SL2H is actually in the hands of Ben Moody, who was an EMG fanatic until he played that guitar.
