• Somethings wrong with me, I like these EMG-HZ

I must have gone completely nuts.

I've been playing around with my DXMG for about a week now..

I really like the EMG-HZ (H3) pickups in my Poplar DXMG.

They are very crisp, tight and clear running through my setup.

In fact I think I like them better than the Duncan Distorion in my Poplar DK1.

This is not supposed to be, these pups are supposed to suck...

This really messes up my world, I want to be a stock pup snob,.. but..but.. I just can't.

I think these things are the nicest stock pups on an import.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">yeah they are nice suppose to be a passive version of the emg 81's I think , and those dudes from children of bodom use em as well cause those custom esps they got make for em were to they're spec's and both guitars have the emg hz's in em so there ya go there's a bunch of pros that use em , I don't know why everyone has a problem with em I think it's all in they're head , and they aren't cheap to by either 75 bucks on stewmac.com so they aren't the bottom of the barrel either , I thought they sounded good in the dkmg or the dxmg , I am acually thinking of picking up a dxmg in gun metal grey soon awesome guitar for the money !!! //Steve

That's interesting. Everybody I've talked to that actually tried them, said they sucked compared to ordinary EMG's. And I seriously doubt that CoB uses them. ESP puts those pickups in pretty much all their retail guitars. It doesn't necessarilly mean that Alexi has one in his guitar.

But of course, I could be wrong.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I have never used EMG active pups before so I really can't compare.

But I have to say, these pups sound pretty good to me, compared to some of my Duncan pups..

Does that mean If I try an 81 or 85 I'll be blown away?

</font><hr /></blockquote><font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">they don't have the punch of a 81 but tone wise they sound just as good just not as punching due to being passive .... and if you look in the esp page there yes they do play emg hz's those guitars aren't production guitars they are customs made to alexi and ale's specs , I bet you'll never see any production of those inless they are usa custom . the emg hz pickups aren't bad pickups so maybe there is something wrong with your amp Sunbane if you think that just kidding . //Steve

EMG-HZ's do not suck. The people that say they suck are generally under the impression that a passive pickup can sound and act like an active pickup and when the HZ's don't sound exactly like their 81's they take a big steaming verbal crap on them spreading the everywhere. The HZ's are good pickups. They are very bright, clear, and have good output. Comparing them to an 81 or 85 is pointless. It's like comparing a SD '59 to a DiMarzio X2N. They're different pickups for different things.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">That's good to hear. I used to have a pair of EMG Select passive pups. They had a pretty decent sound overall, but they were pretty bassy sounding. It sounds like they designed the HZs to have a better eq than the Select series.

The EMG-HZ4's sound great in my DKMGGC37. Very full and yet bright enough to not get lost in the mix. And they have a great clean tone too very bell like when doing harmonics on clean.

I am finding these pups (H3) to be very clear, crisp is a good word... no hint of mud.

To my ears they are sharper than the Duncan distortion, not as much "bite".. but a nice "growl".. if that makes any sense.

In other words, I think they make a pretty respectable passive.

Re: Somethings wrong with me, I like these EMG-HZ

Well, I had them in my DKMGT, and IMO they were quite decent when used with a little (!) boost from the turbocharger...

...however, when I swapped them for the JB/'59 combo the guitar sounded much better IMO.

That said, I compared the HZ's to real EMG-81s in a shop, and didn't notice a big difference... the 81 had a little more punch, but sounded quite the same apart from that.

I think I just don't like the sound of EMGs in general, because I didn't really like the tone of the 81 either...

H3,H4 How do you know what type EMG-HZ you have installed in your guitar? Also, why is the maximum pickup adjustment upwards toward the strings about .250 away from the strings on the MG series guitars? What is the approximate proper distance?

To see what model you have, u must look under the pickup. Probably u will have to take away the strings...
