I think the quality of metal is better on an OFR or Schaller, but a 580 should still have a pretty long life expectancy. I've heard some negative comments about the 500 model and the "satin chrome" 580.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">the satin chrome ones are better than the newer jt 580 lp trems they did a bit of a face lift on the newer jt 580 lp trem I like the older ones better and in fact they have the older ones on the new charvel line take a look next time your at the Jackson dealer the older one is wider and the bar is as nice as a real floyd bar , the newer one looks cheap but still plays nice , and I think they are made by different companys the old one being made by some company in Japan , the newer one I never got a good look at it when I installed it but I could tell by looking at it it was a different quaility and made but a different company all the new dk2's ke3's rr3's ect ect all have that trem , the old ones are totally better quaility ! I allways block mine [cause I like the tuning system and the super low action that you don't allways get on a string thru , and the bridge on a string thru is way to high !!!] so I don't really know how the new ones play [return to zero] //Steve

Does the quality of the "floyd" make a big difference in tone? does a ORF sound much much better than a the "new" jt580lp?

Last night I was sitting here fiddling with my Soloist, doing all sorts of crazy trem s**t with it. All the squeals and wibble and everything. The damn thing didn't go out of tune a bit in about 20 minutes of wanking. I was TRYING to screw it up, too. Make sure your strings are properly stretched out before you tune up, set the thing up where it sits level, and fer f**k's sake, use more than two springs.

Steve: If you can't get the action low enough on a string-thru, more than likely the neck is improperly shimmed. There needs to be a 2-5 degree angle so that the tongue is high enough to compensate for the height of the bridge. You might want to check that out.

"does a OFR sound much much better than a the "new" jt580lp?"

well, mine does. As awesome as my SL-3 is, I just FELT something wasn`t quite right. I installed an old OFR, and it all came together for me. It was like the guitar was waiting for the new trem.

I have the JB in the bridge, and Hotrails in the neck/md positions. You could here the differences dramatically thru both my Pod, and my Mesa Boogie Mrk III Simul-Class.

The Jackson Floyd was spongy and not as responsive. The OFR added a ton of sustain that was missing. It literally completes my SL-3.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">to be completely honest no it doesn't and if it does you'd have to be a genuis to hear it , once you have good pick ups in there it won't matter man , but you'll get more life out of a real floyd than a jt 580lp forsure , but if ya clean it offten it will last longer for ya and probably just as long as a real floyd if your anal like me , but beware man the rust monster comes faster to a jt 580lp than a real floyd ,so keep it clean and you'll be fine ....I feel like a sex theripist now or something //Steve
