While they look the same, they're worlds apart tonally speaking. They Dime isn't nearly as hot, has a lot less low end, and a lot more highs.

              Nice guitar

It looks kinda wierd with that neck pickup.. when I upgraded the bridge pup of my rhoads it looked so wierd that I had to change the neck pup to the same thing just for looks even though i never use neck pickups(at least on jacksons).. heh

                  Re: I put a X2N in my RR3

Sorry to resurrect this old thread, but I thought I'd offer my own little mini-review of the X2N.

I've had an X2N in my Model 6 for a while now, and I must say that I was pleasantly surprised by this pickup!

Being a long time EMG-freak, I was a little worried that it would be too "mushy" for my taste - but no, it has a surprisingly tight bottom end, which is great for heavy rhythms. It's not quite "EMG-tight", but not far from it.

It distorts way differently than the EMGs - more similar to a Duncan in that respect - but it sounds rather close to the EMG in output, probably a bit higher. It gives me plenty of gain for both leads and crushing rhythms.

And the really big surprise is how AWESOME it sounds split on the clean channel! I was never one for pickup splitting or singlecoils, but since I knew that you guys spoke highly of the split function of the X2N, so I had to try it. It has a great clean tone in split mode!

Tonally, it sounds "flatter" than the Duncan Distortion IMO (I LOVE the mid-spikey sound of the DD for leads), but the tone isn't in any way "bad". Just different.

In summary, I was really surprised at how versatile this pickup is. I play everything from 80's era metal (Judas, WASP, etc) to 90's style death, and this pickup can do it all - including the clean ballad parts!

I'd post pictures of the guitar - but I have put the Jackson pickup cover on it, so it looks just like any old Model 6.

                      Re: I put a X2N in my RR3

Did you have to replace the pots to fit the X2N in?

I ask just because I have an RR3 too and maybe next week i'll buy a new pickup...

                      Thanks!

If you still have 500k pots in the guitar (like the originals), you can just wire the X2N in.

All passive pickups usually use 500k pots, including Duncan and DiMarzio. Some people like to use 250k pots, or even 1M pots though. But generally speaking, 500k is the norm.

Humbuckers will work best with a 300k pot, guitars come with 500k pots to open the sound to its full potential. You can put a humbucker in a strat w/250k pots but some treble will be cut off, this can be a good thing on some guitars. There are ways to trick a 500k into thinking its a 300k by using a cap/resistor combo. If I have a bright single volume knob guitar then I will use a .001 cap to trim off the treble. Anyway, you can replace one humbucker for another no problem. As long as they aren't active!
