I've received an e-mail from Fender Customer Relations that says before 2003 it was basswood but after 2003 they are made of alder.

Uh yeah, I already said that a couple months ago. In fact, it's a real possibility that the Fender dude came on here to find your answer!

No first i sent an e-mail to customer relations then he answered me.

Well I can tell you mine is alder. If it is basswood, it is the brightest sounding basswood I have ever heard. I also have two American Fenders made with alder and the Jackson has a brighter tone than both.

There is one of these at a pawn shop I ran into today for 225. I figure I can get it for 200, but don't want to buy it if it isn't alder. Is there any way other than taking the neck off to tell the year? It has the HZ pickups in it, don't they come with real EMGs stock now? Any other ways to put a guess on the year?

Just looked around and it looks like they've never gone with stock EMGs. I guess a lot of people on ebay just switch out the HZs for real EMGs.

Any other possible way to determine an approx year?

No, the present serials are purely sequential, so you need a reference point to be able to guess the production year. If you want to know for sure when your MIJ Jackson was made, you have to take the neck off.

I haven't been able to get out to the pawn shop yet, I'll be heading out later today. I went to so many that I can't remember the name of this one, so I couldn't call to get it.

I know RacerX has a pretty good list of MIJ stuff, is there an approx number that I should try to stay above for 2003 and newer? I hopefully can just check the number there, and buy it while I'm there if you could help with some sort of guideline.
