• SL-3 Trem

Hi. I'm new to the forum. I'm close to buying a Natural SL-3. I've had mixed experiences with locking trem guitars. Does the SL-3's trem need replacing? And if so, would a Floyd Rose Pro fit? I've read that the posts and the knife edges will wear quickly on the OEM locking trem on the SL-3

Re: SL-3 Trem

I don't know how quick 'quick' is, but I've been wailing on mine for over a year now and it's just as good as it was the day I brought it home. The JT580LP is a better piece of work than people around here give it credit for. If you're used to OFR's, a switch will do you good but if you aren't one of those hardcore Floyd weirdos (YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE! ) it's not worth the bother.

I've had five Jacksons with that trem, never had a problem.

Does the SL-3 have a Takaheuchi {Japanese Made} Floyd, or a Schaller {German Made} ??...I forget...

The JT580 used to be Takeuchi, but I think it's made by someone else now, not totally sure, though. The JT590 is the Schaller one.

I'm just worried about quality in the long run. My main question is: If properly used (not abused) and set-up, will this trem last for the life of the guitar without needing any sort of replacement?

I am putting an original Floyd on my SL-3 next weekend. Not sure what the difference will be. I just dig the older Floyds. I like the ol Schaller Floyds too, but try to find one. ;p

No point trying to find them. They're almost the exact same thing as the OFR's. They were made at the same factory in Germany, from what I understand.

I've been using a japanese JT580LP non stop heavily for 4 years now, and i havn't had a single problem. A great trem!

Then I must have gotten a bad one, because mine (580LP with the locks in front of the fine tuners) crapped out inside a month or two.
I like the feel of the OFR better anyway.

if you use your trem the way it was designed to be used, you should have to eventually change it. on steve vai's website they say that he has to replace the tailpiece on EVO (his #1 guitar) a few times per year!

Re: SL-3 Trem

I'm not too fond of the JT580LP's (I've had 4 of them on various Jackson's), but the SL3 is an excellent guitar. A bit pricey, but it's well made and plays like a dream. I had one for about a year until I Ebayed it for something else.

Compare it to some other Japanese made guitars in the same price range. It's makes more sense when you think of it that way.

Re: SL-3 Trem

Just got my OFR installed onto my SL-3 today. Verdict? Amazing. The guitar is now a totally different animal. With the Jackson Floyd in, it wasn`t tight at all. Infact, it seemed like alot of sustain was being lost somewhere in the mix. It was very spongy.
Enter the new original Floyd. The body of the guitar now resonates more.... ALOT more. More sustain as well. I note that the block under the original Floyd is 1 1/4 inches in length. Resting ones palm for muting on the strings doesn`t throw the other strings out of tune.
Power chords are tighter, more focussed, no wobbling warblingness to it. If I hadn`t seen and heard the difference, I almost wouldn`t have believed it. I did re use the arm from the Jackson Floyd tho. It is actually a tad longer, and felt better to use. It allowed easier bending=less effort than the OFR arm.

I tellyas, I`ll never go back to the stock trem. Not in a million years. I haven`t had my bone up for a guitar in a long time, but this trem change over does it for me. ;p
