• Advice on Rhoads Pro

I'm contemplating getting a Randy Rhoads Pro model. I wanted to know a couple things about them. Are the necks set in or is it Neck-thru?. Do they use licensed Floyds? What kind of price could I expect to pay. I found one on the 'net for $499 that looked to be in good condition. Thanks guys.

    Re: Advice on Rhoads Pro

The "Rhoads Pro" is an Japanese-made exact replica of the USA Rhoads model--neckthru and with Schaller Floyd. $499 is a good price for one if it is in really good shape, maybe a bit high, otherwise.

However, it gets more complicated, because a number of different Rhoads "Professional Series" models were released in the mid-late '90s, mostly bolt-on guitars, or the Rhoads Std. (neckthru with cheapo JT-580 trem, rosewood board w/dots). They all say "Professional" on the headstock, but the "Rhoads Pro" is the only one with abalone inlaid Jackson logo, ebony fretboard, and metal trem cavity cover, just like the USA guitars.

    Any questions???

That is mostly true, however, the inlay is not abalone, it's mother of pearl. And the Pro necks of that time are slightly fatter in profile than their USA counterparts. But, yes, the original Pro line is comparable to the USA of that era.

Yeah, I guess the abalone is a little bit more 'colorful', isn't it?

I didn't know that about the Pro series necks. I knew that the Japanese Charvels tended to have somewhat thicker necks (at least mine did), but I figured the Pros would have had more USA-feeling necks.

About the neck thickness... the neck on my '93 Rhoads Pro import is quite a lot thinner than that of my RR1 USA from '97. The measures can be seen here:

Sounds good to Me. I'm looking for a good Rhoads with a Floyd trem to compliment My String-thru RR.

Check the tips of the wings. It won't surprise me if at least half the old RR Pro's have dinged tips now.

Check for inlays. I've seen a dotted version and a sharkfin version.

if you can get a good one without banged up tips and with case for $500, then I officially hate you.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Is that neck through Rhoads import with ebony board and mother of pearl Jackson logo? If so, it's the first I've encountered with a "thinner" profile than the USA counterparts of that era. A USA Rhoads from 1997 is well after the original Pro line, so that wasn't the comparison I was making anyway.

So, if what we are saying is true, the neck profile of the USA Rhoads has changed from very thin (early '90) to fat (late '90). That comes as a surprise to me... maybe someone with an early '90 USA Rhoads could check its measures with a calliper some day and let us know.

YES, all the USA neck profiles got "chunkier" after about 1993. The early 90's USA neck through profiles are very slim in comparison to today's, I don't have the calipers to be totally scientific, but anyone would feel the difference.

man, what a great picture! jackson1, i think you have got to have some of the nicest photograps of guitars that i've seen.

and about those mop logos... they're overlays, or mop stickers that are cleared over. that's what they use on the usa ones, too. if they were inlaid, you'd notice glue around the edges. not that it really matters at all, but i was surprised when i learned that.

Logos are overlays, eh? I sure didn't know that.
